Study of 120 program completers and 100 noncompleters indicates significant differences in recidivism for the two groups. Examines the manner in which substance-using shelter tenants, many of them ex-offenders, who lived in an urban, single- room-occupancy neighborhood, engaged in the process of recommunalization. Provides an overview of a comprehensive, prison-based treatment assessment, including a six-month follow-up study. Results show that 80% of the inmates referred to the program graduated. Graduates demonstrated marked reductions in criminal and drug-use activity and had lower relapse and recidivism rates when compared to other parolees. (RJM)

Describes a model international program for educating physicians about alcohol-related problems, focusing on the initiative's "trainer-development" approach and critical issues in implementing the program in other countries. An overview of the evaluation strategies being used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to monitor and improve a broad national program of HIV prevention among youth in school is presented, emphasizing surveillance of risk behaviors, health outcomes, and school-related policies and programs. A review of several adolescent suicide prevention procedures and empirical evidence regarding their effectiveness finds that, although research is limited, best practice involves a school-based prevention approach that includes a mixture of primary and secondary prevention components.
