Results indicated that children showed greater evidence of behavioral distress than adolescents only during the actual medical procedure; however, additional behaviors were observed that suggested that the checklist was age biased. To define the educational goals and problems of nurses caring for cancer patients in Vermont, a survey was conducted. The most heavily favored topics were those related to helping the patient adapt to illness. Commonly cited difficulties were poor communication with doctors and negative attitudes of coworkers. Investigated respondents' (N=162) feelings about and willingness to volunteer to help a dying cancer patient versus a patient with cancer in remission or one portrayed as having a broken leg.
