Blatchford, Charles H. – TESOL Quarterly, 1971
Much of the content was presented at the TESOL Convention, New Orleans, Louisiana, March 1971, and is derived from the author's dissertation Experimental Steps to Ascertain Reliability of Diagnostic Tests in English as a Second Language" (Columbia University). (VM)
Descriptors: Criterion Referenced Tests, Diagnostic Tests, Educational Experiments, English (Second Language)

Wilcox, Rand R. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
When determining criterion-referenced test length, problems of guessing are shown to be more serious than expected. A new method of scoring is presented that corrects for guessing without assuming that guessing is random. Empirical investigations of the procedure are examined. Test length can be substantially reduced. (Author/CM)
Descriptors: Criterion Referenced Tests, Guessing (Tests), Multiple Choice Tests, Scoring

McCowan, Richard J.; And Others – Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, 1983
CREST (an evaluation model for social services training) was developed to assess short-term training for social service workers. The model is based on a criterion-referenced, competency-based concept of evaluation. The rationale for the model, procedures, and the computerized system used to manage trainee data are described. (Author/LC)
Descriptors: Computer Managed Instruction, Continuing Education, Criterion Referenced Tests, Evaluation
Mellenbergh, Gideon J.; van der Linden, Wim J. – Evaluation in Education: International Progress, 1982
Three item selection methods for criterion-referenced tests are examined: the classical theory of item difficulty and item-test correlation; the latent trait theory of item characteristic curves; and a decision-theoretic approach for optimal item selection. Item contribution to the standardized expected utility of mastery testing is discussed. (CM)
Descriptors: Criterion Referenced Tests, Educational Testing, Item Analysis, Latent Trait Theory
Warries, Egbert – Evaluation in Education: International Progress, 1982
Mastery learning strategies and criterion referenced measurement tools perform a selective function in the classroom. The selective approach within the philosophical role of schools is discussed in terms of limited educational employment, competition, talent distribution, and the suggested attributes of good testing. (CM)
Descriptors: Academic Standards, Criterion Referenced Tests, Educational Philosophy, Educational Responsibility

Healy, Charles C. – Journal of Career Education, 1982
Identifies and describes six differences between formative and summative evaluation in career education. Formative evaluation involves more coordination, more stress, special observation and teaching skills, criterion-referenced measures, learner safeguards, and choosing priorities among objectives. (SK)
Descriptors: Career Education, Coordination, Criterion Referenced Tests, Educational Objectives

Bell, Deanne F.; Bell, Durward L. – Nurse Educator, 1983
A combination of self-directed learning and teacher-directed learning provides a rich and flexible learning experience and accommodates various teaching styles. The key to a successful mixture is the appropriate use of criterion-referencing and normative-referencing for learner evaluation. (JOW)
Descriptors: Competency Based Education, Criterion Referenced Tests, Learning Modules, Norm Referenced Tests

van der Linden, Wim J. – Review of Educational Research, 1981
Using criterion-referenced test item data collected in an empirical study, differences in item selection between Cox and Vargas' pretest-posttest validity index and a latent trait approach (evaluation of the item information function for the mastery score) are analyzed. (Author/GK)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Criterion Referenced Tests, Foreign Countries, Latent Trait Theory
Ainsworth, Jack – Performance and Instruction, 1981
Traces the history of military efforts to systematize the design, development, installation, and operational training for a weapons system and discusses the current status of criterion referenced instruction in Army training programs. Steps being taken to remedy identified problems are described. (MER)
Descriptors: Competency Based Education, Criterion Referenced Tests, Instructional Development, Military Training
Priestly, Michael; Nassif, Paula M. – Educational Technology, 1979
Focuses on the methods of establishing and maintaining content validity of criterion-referenced multiple-choice tests through refined item writing techniques. (Author)
Descriptors: Content Analysis, Criterion Referenced Tests, Educational Objectives, Guides

Arkell, Claudia – American Annals of the Deaf, 1981
Among suggestions for integrating assessment data into individualized education programs for multiply handicapped deaf students are to use criterion-referenced instruments and to view the domain areas as potential goal statements, the subdomains as potential long term objectives, and subcategory items as potential short term objectives. (Author/CL)
Descriptors: Criterion Referenced Tests, Deafness, Elementary Secondary Education, Individualized Education Programs

Ford, Charles, Jr. – Clearing House, 1980
The author examines four testing alternatives for minority group children who consistently do poorly on standardized tests: off-grade-level testing; not testing minority children at all; changing to an easier test; and criterion-referenced testing. He favors the last alternative. (SJL)
Descriptors: Criterion Referenced Tests, Elementary Secondary Education, Minority Group Children, Nontraditional Education

Vincent, Denis – Educational Review, 1980
Language assessment is reviewed as a technology which could become more effective for classroom use through school-based development and greater use of alternatives to standardized testing. (Author)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Criterion Referenced Tests, Diagnostic Tests, Educational Philosophy

Walker, Thomas J. – Journal of Industrial Teacher Education, 1981
Describes a study which sought to develop a criterion-referenced cognitive instrument based on the 83 performance elements contained in 30 teacher education modules. Discusses whether it is educationally sound to conclude that those who possess appropriate teaching skills also possess an appropriate cognitive base. (JOW)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Cognitive Measurement, Competency Based Teacher Education, Criterion Referenced Tests

Lewellen, James R.; Nagy, Barbara Pashos – NASSP Bulletin, 1981
Students can succeed in remedial programs if such programs are well-planned and systematic, say these writers, who offer some guidelines. (Author/JM)
Descriptors: Criterion Referenced Tests, Educational Objectives, Instructional Materials, Program Evaluation
