Birk, James P., Ed. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1990
Described are two applications of computers in chemistry. The multilinear equations and procedures used in obtaining a least-squares solution for curve fitting in chemistry are presented. Also discussed is the program "ATORB" which can be used to generate graphs of probable electron clouds for various atoms and molecules. (CW)
Descriptors: Atomic Structure, Chemistry, College Science, Computation

Sowder, Judith T.; Wheeler, Margariete M. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1989
Investigates the development of concepts and processes associated with computational estimation. Twelve students at each of grades three, five, seven, and nine were interviewed. The older children understood better than the younger children what was asked but were uncomfortable with estimation processes and outcomes. (Author/YP)
Descriptors: Computation, Concept Formation, Elementary School Mathematics, Estimation (Mathematics)

Dalton, David W.; Hannafin, Michael J. – Journal of Educational Research, 1988
Results of a study of 117 eighth-grade math students suggest: mastery-based methods were more effective than non-mastery methods in improving lesson achievement; computer-based and traditional delivery systems are of greatest value when complementing each other; and student attitudes were only nominally affected by various treatments. (IAH)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Computation, Computer Assisted Instruction, Delivery Systems

Watson, Jane M. – School Science and Mathematics, 1993
Presents examples of word problems that can be used to illustrate the distributive property for preservice teachers. Includes examples involving extended sums, volume, area, prealgebra, place value, long multiplication, fractions, decimals, and algebra. (MDH)
Descriptors: Area, Computation, Elementary Secondary Education, Higher Education

Middleton, James A.; Heuvel-Panhuizen, Marja van den – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 1995
Examines the use of a ratio table for developing students' conceptual understanding of rational number. The ratio table is an alternative to cross-multiplication and can utilize both additive and multiplicative strategies. It organizes numbers and keeps track of operations and results, which aids the teacher in assessment. (MLB)
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Computation, Concept Formation, Elementary School Mathematics

Geary, David C.; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1991
Over a 10-month period, normal children showed an increased reliance on memory retrieval and a decreased reliance on counting when they solved addition problems. There was an increase in speed of counting and of retrieving addition facts from long-term memory. Children with a mathematical learning disability showed no change in problem-solving…
Descriptors: Addition, Cognitive Processes, Computation, Elementary School Students

Wheatley, Grayson H. – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1992
Discusses the limitations in the explain-practice and active learning methods of teaching mathematics. Proposes that problem-centered learning is a teaching method that encourages student reflection, and presents examples demonstrating that encouraging reflection results in greater mathematics achievement. (MDH)
Descriptors: Computation, Constructivism (Learning), Cooperative Learning, Critical Thinking

Byrnes, James P.; Takahira, Sayuri – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1994
Results from 40 high school students on the mathematics subtest of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) support the prediction that successful students would have more prior knowledge and would be better at defining problems, assembling strategies, and avoiding computational errors. Results are discussed in terms of a cognitive processing model.…

Mooney, Paul; Ryan, Joseph B.; Uhing, Brad M.; Reid, Robert; Epstein, Michael H. – Journal of Behavioral Education, 2005
The purpose of this review was to report on the effectiveness and focus of academic self-management interventions for children and adolescents with emotional and behavioral disorders. Twenty-two studies published in 20 articles and involving 78 participants met inclusionary criteria. The overall mean effect size (ES) across those studies was 1.80…

Belfield, Clive R. – Education Policy Analysis Archives, 2004
U.S. students now have four choices of schooling: public schooling, private-religious schooling, private-independent schooling, and home-schooling. Of these, home-schooling is the most novel: since legalization across the states in the last few decades, it has grown in importance and legitimacy as an alternative choice. Thus, it is now possible to…

Texas Education Agency, Austin. Div. of Curriculum Development. – 1994
This document is designed to assist teachers and other school personnel in the planning and teaching of the seventh grade mathematics course. Contents include: (1) Overview of Grade 7 Mathematics (mission statement, purpose and philosophy, goals, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics, and uses…
Descriptors: Behavioral Objectives, Computation, Grade 7, Homework
Capani, Antonio; De Dominicis, Gabriel – 1996
This paper proposes a model for a general interface between people and Computer Algebra Systems (CAS). The main features in the CAS interface are data navigation and the possibility of accessing powerful remote machines. This model is based on the idea of session management, in which the main engine of the tool enables interactions with the…

Silver, Edward A. – 1990
This paper discusses the central thesis that new research on estimation and mental computation will benefit from more focused attention on the situations in which they are used. In the first section of the paper, a brief discussion of cognitive theory, with special attention to the emerging notion of situated cognition is presented. Three sources…

Safford, Kathy – 1992
This document offers instructional materials for a 60-hour course on math operations involving decimals, fractions, proportions, statistics, probability, measurement, geometry, and linear algebra as applied in the workplace. The course was part of a workplace literacy project developed by Mercer County Community College (New Jersey) and its…
