AMSTER, HARRIETT – 1966
THE GENERAL PROBLEM UNDER INVESTIGATION CONCERNED TWO PROCESSES OF CONCEPT FORMATION - THE DEDUCTIVE REASONING PROCESS AND THE ASSOCIATIVE PROCESS - EMPLOYED BY CHILDREN OF ELEMENTARY-SCHOOL AGE. IT WAS ASSUMED THAT BOTH OF THESE PROCESSES ARE FOUND IN VARYING DEGREES AMONG CHILDREN OF DIFFERENT AGES AND MENTAL ABILITIES, DEPENDING UPON THE…

Riegel, Klaus F.; And Others – 1965
Four experiments were conducted on the interrelationship between semantic and syntactic structures. The former were specified by the method of restricted associations, and the latter by traditional grammatical analysis. In all experiments subjects were required to generate sentences from sets of given words. The generated sentences were studied as…

Preece, Peter F. W. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1978
This study explores the acquisition of proportionality by investigating the relationship between an understanding of proportionality and the development of cognitive structure in the domain of mechanics. (Author/MA)

DeWolfe, Alan S.; Fedirka, Paul J. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1978
Assessed the effect of associative (response) interference on the word associations of male and female process and reactive schizophrenics in two studies that used the difference in associative disturbances between high and low interference (low and high commonality stimulus words) as the measure. Findings supported predictions from a qualitative…

Lee, Catherine L.; Estes, William K. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
A short-term recall task in which letters were spaced in different ways by distractor digits was used to separate aspects of primary and secondary memory processes and to permit examination of primary memory for position, order and item independently. Memory for order appeared derivative to memory for temporal position. (CHK)

Gluck, Mark A.; Thompson, Richard F. – Psychological Review, 1987
A computational model of the neural substrates of elementary associate learning is developed. It is used to demonstrate that several higher order features of classical conditioning could be elaborations of the known cellular mechanisms for simple associative learning. (Author/LMO)

Anooshian, Linda J.; Samuelson, Julie A. – International Journal of Aging and Human Development, 1986
Young, middle-age, and old adults ranked similarities of word pairs in a conditional rank-ordering task. Analyses of variance revealed an age-related decline in semantic processing but no such decline for elaboration. Older adults' retrieval was less compatible with initial processing than was the case for younger adults. (Author/ABB)

Bayer, Ann Shea – Journal of Research and Development in Education, 1986
Five teachers used exploratory talk as a tool for learning as they developed policy concerning the use of writing across the curriculum. Transcripts were analyzed for development of scientific concepts (learning) through increased use of specialized vocabulary (language growth). (Author/MT)

Stevick, Earl W. – Foreign Language Annals, 1984
Using "image" as a central concept, offers an interpretation of the similarities and differences between oral and written comprehension based on studies of both the associative and the generative properties of human memory. The practical consequences of this interpretation on second language teaching are listed. (SED)

Levinson, Philip J.; Kunze, Luvern H. – Psychology in the Schools, 1973
This study examined the extent to which the Auditory Association subtest of the revised Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities (ITPA) measures the ability of children to complete verbal analogies. (Author)

DiCaprio, Nicholas S.; Perample, Thomas C. – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 1973
Two techniques of anxiety reduction are studied singly and in combination: rapid repetition of words and paired-associate learning. Paired-associate learning with Counteracting Response Associates yielded the best long-term reduction in response anxiety, which suggests the potential application of this technique in therapy.
