A review of 208 studies of children with learning disabilities (LD) published in 10 major journals between 1988 and 1990 examined the extent to which recommendations concerning research design and reporting made in 1980 and 1984 have been implemented. Peer reviewedNoah, Harold J. – Comparative Education Review, 1987
A former member of the IEA's global "invisible college" reflects on some aspects of the organization's work and findings, pointing out that international differences in achievement are generally smaller than within-nation differences and that national differences in context and input are associated with broadly similar outcomes. Also…

Peer reviewedAchilles, C. M.; Sharp, Mark A. – Catalyst for Change, 1998
Using research to develop a solid educational foundation can accommodate diverse forces confronting educators, initiate systemic change, and help solve the pupil-teacher ratio (PTR)/class-size puzzle. Small K-3 classes are effective and can be efficient if changes are research-based and exploit class-size and PTR differences. (25 references) (MLH)
Descriptors: Change Strategies, Class Size, Educational Research, Foundations of Education
Peer reviewedDuncan, P. Kay – Journal for a Just and Caring Education, 1999
The author, formerly a principal, examines her experience as a research subject to demonstrate the harmful potential of qualitative research that tries too hard to "emancipate" participants. She herself became a casualty of invasive inquiry, defined as a violation of self. Personalization of study findings is ill-advised. (24 references)…

Peer reviewedRyan, Michael; Martinson, David L. – Journalism and Mass Communication Educator, 1999
Surveys journalism and mass-communication researchers regarding the extent to which they have experienced unprofessional behavior by editors and referees in the evaluation of manuscripts. Descriptors: Communication Research, Editors, Evaluation Criteria, Faculty Publishing
Peer reviewedKu, Leighton; Besharov, Douglas J.; Germanis, Peter – Public Interest, 1999
L. Ku supports the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) nutrition program as effective in improving children's health. D. Besharov and P. Peer reviewedMesser, David; Joiner, Richard; Light, Paul; Littleton, Karen – Educational Psychology: An International Journal of Experimental Educational Psychology, 1998
Investigates predictions derived from the Karmiloff Smith framework for understanding the process of cognitive development. Finds broad support for the model but also indicates that behavior for some tasks is more variable than expected; and, contrary to expectations, that more abstract tasks did not disrupt behavior to any large extent. (DSK)
Descriptors: Child Development, Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes, Educational Psychology
Peer reviewedHoffmann, Berno – Zeitschrift fur Padagogik, 1997
Inquires whether educational science lacks research on boys and male adults. Contrasts arguments that there is a lack of research on males, with suggestions that such research already exists. Advances a theory of a modern socialization of the sexes and uses it to develop a critical pedagogy of the sexes. (DSK)
Descriptors: Children, Educational Research, Educational Theories, Literature Reviews
Peer reviewedGibson, Alex; Asthana, Sheena – British Educational Research Journal, 1998

Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Economic Factors, Educational Assessment, Foreign Countries
Peer reviewedJensen, Eric – Educational Leadership, 2000
Although neuroscience has much to offer teaching and learning conceptualizations, educators must be cautious about applying lab research to classrooms. Brain research seems hazy, confusing, and contradictory because it is new. Myths about synapses, low-stress learning, memorization, enrichment, and learning styles are debunked. (MLH)
