An experimental test of the self-paced interactive PLATO computer-based Dilemma Counseling System (PLATO DCS) was conducted. PLATO DCS counseling resulted in greater improvement in clients than did counseling in controlled conditions. Subjects rated the PLATO DCS as interesting and not too impersonal. (Author)

A study using 60 first-year medical students in the Santo Amaro Faculty of Medicine, San Paulo, Brazil, found that self-instructional methods such as guided self-instruction or discussion groups are not superior to conventional classes. Self-instruction does have the advantages of low cost and easy applicability. (LBH)

Five young adults and three junior high students, with moderate mental retardation, were trained first to label characters verbally and then to enter the characters into computers, calculators, or checkbooks.
