In an effort to generate hypotheses on the increase in youth suicide in the United States, studies from other countries are reviewed, which relate suicide to factors within the general areas of the family, religion, transition and mobility, achievement motivation, and aggression. The increase in suicides by firearms in all sex-ethnic groups accompanied marked increases in the availability of firearms, which is a preferred, socioculturally accepted method of suicide. Studies suggest that suicides may be prevented by decreasing the availability of the most common methods of suicide to suicidal individuals. (Author)

Explored the relationship among depressive symptoms, anxiety, hopelessness, and suicidal intent in a group of 77 adolescents following a suicide attempt. Results indicate that hopelessness was the only significant predictor of suicide intent in Caucasian patients, and depressed mood was the only significant predictor in the Aboriginal group. (RJM)

Examines comorbidity among depressive symptoms, conduct problems, and alcohol and drug abuse in a sample of 1,050 students. Those reporting high levels of depression, along with either alcohol abuse or conduct problems, were more likely to attempt suicide than students reporting only one of these disorders.
