Abruscato, Joseph – Phi Delta Kappan, 1993
Early results from the Vermont Portfolio Project, which evaluated the progress of fourth and eighth graders in reading and mathematics using samples of student products, suggests that improvement is still needed in both subjects. Many factors will influence this pilot project's future direction, including availability of resources and development…

Sagini, Meshack M. – Community/Junior College Quarterly of Research and Practice, 1991
Reports on a study of the perceptions of 42 top- and middle-level administrators at 4 community colleges concerning the planning models and decision-making processes used at their college. Reports that both rural colleges relied on a consensus model, whereas the two urban colleges used autocracy and rational models respectively. (DMM)

Ross, William A. – Engineering Design Graphics Journal, 1990
The existing methods for graphically illustrating projection and coordinate systems for manual and computer-aided drafting and design are examined. Inconsistencies in methods used to graphically depict first and third angle projection in texts and the lack of attention in the relationship of projection to coordinate systems are noted. (KR)

Khonsari, Michael M.; Horn, Douglas – Engineering Design Graphics Journal, 1990
An algorithm is described for generating smooth curves of first-order continuity. The algorithm is composed of several cubic Bezier curves joined together at the user defined control points. Introduced is a tension control parameter which can be set thus providing additional flexibility in the design of free-form curves. (KR)

Wiley, Scott E. – Engineering Design Graphics Journal, 1990
The focus of this article is on how computer graphics can be integrated throughout the engineering graphics curriculum to increase visual perceptual skills. Visual perception is defined, the need to develop it is described, and methods which engineering graphics educators can use to develop it are outlined. (KR)

Todd, Ron; Hutchinson, Pat – TIES Magazine, 1991
A paradigm that suggests the critical factor of quality rather than quantity of knowledge is proposed. The potential for retention and transfer in using a design and technology approach is discussed. Activities that generate relevant data for students are provided. (KR)

Herman, Eugene A., Ed. – College Mathematics Journal, 1991
This review features new examples of using the computer relative to college-level mathematics to enhance pedagogy, solve problems, and model real-life situations. Included is a LOGO program that can be used to create and to stimulate subsequent investigations of spirolaterals, those figures generated by repeatedly drawing basic loops. (JJK)

Bardwell, Lisa – Journal of Environmental Education, 1991
Describes a new strategy for informing and involving people in environmental issues. Presents stories of successful efforts by ordinary people to effect environmental change. Suggests that these stories can provide the help people need to build more adequate models about environmental problems and about their roles in addressing them. (27…

Cardelle-Elawar, Maria – Teaching and Teacher Education, 1992
Researchers investigated the effects of metacognitive mathematics instruction on low-ability, mainly Hispanic, sixth graders. Lack of linguistic, strategic, and procedural knowledge was the major source of errors in solving problems. Pre- and posttesting indicated students receiving metacognitive instruction progressed as problem solvers and…

Russ, Steve – For the Learning of Mathematics, 1991
Presents contributions by six mathematics teachers responding to the question: "How has the history of mathematics mattered to me in my mathematics teaching?" Answers touch the topics of how and why, how benefits are accrued, use of original texts, integration into core curriculum courses, and pitfalls of history. (MDH)

de Villiers, Michael D. – Physics Teacher, 1991
Presents a simple mathematical model in which resultant speed is the sum or difference between wind speed and runner speed and a more complex model that assumes that only a proportion of the wind's speed affects one's running speed to describe the time difference between running with and without wind. (MDH)

Montague, Marjorie – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1992
Six students (ages 12-14) with learning disabilities received either cognitive or metacognitive strategy instruction for mathematical problem solving, followed by instruction in the complementary component. Results indicated that cognitive and metacognitive strategies were more effective than either cognitive or metacognitive strategy instruction…
