Peer reviewedAdner, Haya – School Science and Mathematics, 1990
Investigated the effect of the choice of a model's medium (algebraic expression or computer program) on the performance of students. Student programers did not transfer the qualities of a computer program approach to their algebraic models. Provides items for five tests. (YP)
Descriptors: Algebra, College Mathematics, Computer Software, Higher Education
Peer reviewedDjordje, Kadijevic – Mathematics in School, 1990
Provides two examples of the "regular falsi" method using geometry and a computer program. (YP)
Descriptors: Geometric Concepts, Geometry, Mathematical Concepts, Mathematical Logic
Peer reviewedTobin, Kenneth – School Science and Mathematics, 1990
Reviews research on the purpose and effectiveness of laboratory activities. Discusses epistemology, problem solving, cooperative learning, student involvement, assessment, and teachers as researchers. (YP)
Descriptors: Elementary School Science, Elementary Secondary Education, Laboratory Experiments, Laboratory Procedures
Peer reviewedBailey, Nancy Martin – Journal of Aesthetic Education, 1989
Outlines how poetry, especially the Moderns, can enhance problem-solving skills. Presents George Steiner's four problem categories: contingent, modal, tactical, and ontological. Discusses the application of these categories to obtuse poetry. (KM)
Descriptors: Creative Thinking, Creative Writing, Critical Thinking, Decision Making Skills
Peer reviewedHagaman, Sally – Studies in Art Education, 1990
Describes the Philosophy for Children program in critical thinking, its pedagogical approach involving the community of inquiry, and the sociocognitive learning theories upon which it is based. Suggests it can be used as a pedagogical model for developing collaborative learning approaches in art education, especially aesthetics. (KM)
Descriptors: Aesthetic Education, Art Education, Cooperative Learning, Critical Thinking
Peer reviewedPendlebury, Shirley – Educational Theory, 1990
Effective deliberation in teaching relies upon situational appreciation. This article examines some of the central issues and confusing claims in the current debate over the notion of practical arguments as a way of better understanding how teachers think when they deliberate about what to do in the classroom. (IAH)

Peer reviewedBoero, Paolo; And Others – For the Learning of Mathematics, 1989
Investigates children's behaviors and conceptual achievements in the transition from informal calculation strategies to a written division algorithm. Describes five different strategies observed in the solution of division problems. Discusses the implications of the children's behavior. (YP)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Computation, Division, Elementary Education
Peer reviewedClement, John; Konold, Clifford – For the Learning of Mathematics, 1989
Describes basic problem-solving skills and presents a protocol of a student solving a problem. Discusses some of the difficulties in obtaining a correct solution. Lists basic prompts for problem solving. (YP)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Higher Education, Mathematics Instruction, Mathematics Skills
Peer reviewedMick, Harold W.; Sinicrope, Rose – School Science and Mathematics, 1989
Discussed is the meaning of the word "of" as is found in mathematical expressions that involve fractional numbers. The conceptual rather than numerical distinction is stressed. Teaching techniques regarding difficulties with this concept are suggested. (CW)
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Elementary School Mathematics, Elementary Secondary Education, Fractions
Peer reviewedWoods, Donald R. – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1990
Suggested are ways that problem solving can be integrated into existing college courses. Modification of assignments, reduction of class examples, developing the structure of knowledge, finding time to teach process skills, and developing student awareness are discussed. A self-assessment form for students is included. (CW)

Peer reviewedTatsuoka, Kikumi K.; And Others – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1989
The consistency with which students apply procedural rules for solving signed-number operations across identical items presented in different orders was examined in a study involving 161 eighth graders. Inconsistent rule application was common among students who had not mastered signed-number arithmetic operations. (TJH)
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Grade 8, Hypothesis Testing, Junior High School Students
Peer reviewedZook, Kevin B.; Di Vesta, Francis J. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1989
The effects of overt or covert verbalization and specific or non-specific goals were investigated. Sixty-four undergraduate students solved acquisition problems and subsequently took tests measuring near and far transfer. Results indicate that acquisition can be influenced by teaching methods emphasizing conscious attention to goals. (SLD)
