Londner, Linda – Journal of Creative Behavior, 1991
Eight sixth grade gifted students verbalized their thoughts as they worked on figural task drawings. Analysis of resulting data indicated that the process variables of Story Weaving, Association Shifting, and Vantage were more frequently evidenced by subjects producing more original products, whereas Content Bound Linking was associated with…

Pashiardis, Petros A.; Baker, George A., III – Community/Junior College Quarterly of Research and Practice, 1992
Superintendents from 220 school districts and 68 community college presidents were asked to identify processes they would employ to recommend solutions to strategic issues. Investigates the effect of institutional performance level and superintendents'/presidents' perceptions and subjective labeling of the strategic issues on the process of…

Adigwe, J. C. – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1991
The problem-solving difficulties of Nigerian preservice chemistry teachers (n=300) were investigated. The results from written tests and an interview show students were capable of constructing mental representations but not solution plans; had inappropriate approaches and strategies; exhibited structural errors relating to a disregard of given…

Litweller, Bonnie H.; Duncan, David R. – Mathematics Teacher, 1992
The on-off settings of a series of eight switches determines the code to open garage doors. Presented are two problems asking the probability that two people would have the same garage door opener code or whether a specific person would have the same code as another person in the neighborhood. Beattie, John R.; Enright, Brian E. – Teaching Exceptional Children, 1993
This article discusses the fourth step in a process for solving mathematics problems--verifying the plan of action for solving the problem and developing the plan of action into an equation. The lesson plan included reviews the first three steps in the problem-solving process and provides directed instruction guidelines. (JDD)

Hughes, Carolyn – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1992
This study demonstrated that four adults with severe mental retardation could learn to use self-instruction in combination with multiple exemplars, could acquire the problem-solving strategy (responding to multiple exemplars and self-instructing) during training and generalize to untrained problem situations, and could exhibit response maintenance…

Shaw, Donna Gail; Dybdahl, Claudia S. – Preventing School Failure, 1992
This paper uses the topic of rain forests to demonstrate how a meaningful and relevant Science, Technology, and Society program can be designed for intermediate-level students. Students create and immerse themselves in a tropical rain forest, explore the forest ecosystem and peoples, and consider solutions to the problem of deforestation. (JDD)

Funkhouser, Charles; Dennis, J. Richard – Journal of Research on Computing in Education, 1992
Pretests measuring problem-solving ability were administered to 71 students in a high school mathematics class. One group was given computer-augmented instruction; the other group was given instruction augmented by mathematics laboratory activities. Posttest results for problem-solving ability were mixed, but the group receiving computer-augmented…

Gallagher, Shelagh A.; And Others – Gifted Child Quarterly, 1992
This study found that participants (n=78) in Science, Society and the Future, a problem-based course for gifted high school students, exhibited significant improvement in problem-solving schemes compared to a group of 42 gifted nonparticipants. The pattern of change was not consistent across problem-solving steps. (JDD)
