The internal consistency and validity of three new scales for measuring assertiveness in children were tested. Two of the scales were able to "unbind" aggressive from assertive behavior, while the third was able to "unbind" submissive from assertive behavior. A survey of 500 Black female freshwomen and seniors at two Black and four predominantly White colleges revealed that adverse conditions at White schools are more likely to encourage self-reliance and assertiveness.
