A study found that college students may have a misplaced confidence in their ability to assess their own fitness and plan their own exercise programs. Results indicate that a lecture-laboratory course does improve the knowledge level of students and seems to improve their confidence in exercise planning. (JN)

Data from a sample of Blacks aged 11 to 16 indicated drinkers were more likely to report health problems. The correlation between drinking and poor health was most noted among young males and older females. Drinkers reported more sleep disturbances. Tobacco use was a predictor of drinking and pregnancy. Measured concerns of 106 mental health workers by means of Dickstein's Death Concern Scale. Data indicated that married and formerly married workers reported lower death concerns than never-married persons. Respondents who were seriously ill reported higher death concerns. Examined background and personality characteristics associated with low and high self-esteem in the elderly by studying 250 men and women age 65 and older. Results indicated the low self-esteem group had poorer self-reported health, higher scores on depression, anxiety, somatization, and a more external locus of control orientation. (Author)

Examined partial retirement among older self-employed and wage and salary workers. Found much more partial retirement among the self-employed. Devins, Gerald M. – Omega: Journal of Death and Dying, 1980
Greater death acceptance and anxiety were observed among rural as compared to urban-dwelling participants. Responses by a life-threatened geriatric subsample revealed differences in death fears related to type of medical disorder. Previous findings of no difference in the death fears of heart and cancer patients were replicated. (Author)
