Kozak, Marcin – Teaching Statistics: An International Journal for Teachers, 2009
This article suggests how to explain a problem of small sample size when considering correlation between two Normal variables. Two techniques are shown: one based on graphs and the other on simulation. (Contains 3 figures and 1 table.)

Joarder, Anwar H. – Teaching Statistics: An International Journal for Teachers, 2009
This article demonstrates that the variance of three or four observations can be expressed in terms of the range and the first order differences of the observations. A more general result, which holds for any number of observations, is also stated.

Long, Michael A.; Berry, Kenneth J.; Mielke, Paul W., Jr. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2009
An exact permutation test is provided for the tetrachoric correlation coefficient. Comparisons with the conventional test employing Student's t distribution demonstrate the necessity of using the permutation approach for small sample sizes and/or disproportionate marginal frequency totals. (Contains 4 tables.)

Niu, Sunny X. – Research in Higher Education, 2015
Using the College Board SAT registration and questionnaire data of 2010 high school graduating seniors, we found clear patterns by race/ethnicity and parental education on two outcomes: out-of-state score-sending and out-of-state college attendance. White students had the highest rates and Hispanic students had the lowest rates, and there was a…

Borman, Geoffrey D.; Park, So Jung; Min, Sookweon – Online Submission, 2015
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of Achieve3000, a differentiated online literacy curriculum, on students' scores on the California State Test (CST). In the 2011-12 school year, 1,957 students in Chula Vista began using Achieve3000's solutions in 3rd through 8th grade. Using a form of propensity score matching called Inverse…

de Oliveira Souza, Leandro; Lopes, Celi Espasandin; de Oliveira Mendonça, Luzinete – Statistics Education Research Journal, 2014
The inclusion of statistics and probability in the mathematics curriculum has always generated challenges to mathematics teachers of elementary schools. This article discusses activities that promote the professional development of such teachers. We present part of a doctoral research study of 16 teachers in which we discuss two case studies of…

Klein, Joseph – Journal of Education and Training Studies, 2014
Recent neurophysiological advances may support the advisability of delaying decisions when possible and practical. An empirical study, based on an educational dilemma, compared the outcome of postponing an educational decision overnight or for a longer period. 340 teachers read a report on an educational dilemma and gave an immediate opinion.…

Ingersoll, Richard M.; Merrill, Lisa; May, Henry – Consortium for Policy Research in Education, 2014
This study addresses the question: Do the kinds and amounts of pre-service education and preparation that beginning teachers receive before they start teaching have any impact on whether they leave teaching? We examine a wide range of measures of teachers' subject-matter education and pedagogical preparation. We also compare different fields of…

Koenig, Alan D.; Lee, John J.; Iseli, Markus; Wainess, Richard – National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST), 2010
The military's need for high-fidelity games and simulations is substantial, as these environments can be valuable for demonstration of essential knowledge, skills, and abilities required in complex tasks. However assessing performance in these settings can be difficult--particularly in non-linear simulations where more than one pathway to success…

Vaquero, Joaquin M. M.; Fiacconi, Chris; Milliken, Bruce – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 2010
The qualitative difference method for distinguishing between aware and unaware processes was applied here to a spatial priming task. Participants were asked simply to locate a target stimulus that appeared in one of four locations, and this target stimulus was preceded by a prime in one of the same four locations. The prime location predicted the…
