Pasmore, William; Friedlander, Frank – Administrative Science Quarterly, 1982
Describes the use of participative action research to solve problems of work-related employee injuries in a rural midwestern electronics plant by increasing employee involvement. The researchers established an employee problem-solving group that interviewed and surveyed workers, analyzed the results, and suggested new work arrangements. (Author/RW)

Griggs, Richard A.; Newstead, Stephen E. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
Four experiments were conducted to determine the source of difficulty of Wason's THOG problem. The THOG problem permits examination of the way people tackle a novel hypothetico-deductive problem. The results are interpreted as demonstrating the importance of problem presentation in problem solving. (Author/PN)

Reshetova, Z. A. – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1982
The process of forming practical abilities and skills in training situations through the control of the assimilation process is described, and an experimental application of this process for the instruction of machine operators is reported. Six references are included. (CHC)

Buidens, Wayne; And Others – Phi Delta Kappan, 1981
Describes a new method of resolving conflicts, called "collective gaining," that has been implemented in the Forest Park (Illinois) public school system. The method encourages teachers, administrators, and school board members to work together to benefit all parties concerned. (Author/WD)

Beard, Earl M. L.; Polis, A. Richard – Arithmetic Teacher, 1981
The subtraction ideas presented are designed for elementary and junior high school children, yet are felt to be flexible enough to offer some challenge for high school students, particularly in algebra. (MP)
Descriptors: Algebra, Computation, Elementary School Mathematics, Elementary Secondary Education
Engel, Arthur – Mathematics Teaching, 1981
The need for incorporating algorithmics into mathematics instruction is presented. The proliferation of computers is seen to have made the designing of algorithms an essential skill. Examples are given, and the view that mathematics will lose much prestige and importance if algorithmics is not integrated into it is presented. (MP)

Krause, Eugene F. – Mathematics Teacher, 1982
A class of seldom-seen real-world applications of high school mathematics is described. The problems considered are viewed as more substantial than ordinary word problems and thus are thought to require a greater commitment of time and energy. Suggestions for student extensions of the project are made. (MP)

Fennell, Francis (Skip); And Others – Arithmetic Teacher, 1982
Gardening is the theme for a series of worksheets that present a variety of problem-solving activities that emphasize the construction, use, and interpretation of diagrams, graphs, and tables. The material is designed for duplication for classroom use, and suggestions for ways of going further are provided with each activity. (MP)

Verhille, Charles; Blake, Rick – Mathematics Teacher, 1982
Educational activities based on easily constructed peg games are detailed, along with advice on how they can be constructed. The activities are designed to guide students to collect and organize data; recognize, extend, and generalize patterns; and develop problem-solving strategies. (MP)

Gelovan, Viktor – Impact of Science on Society, 1981
Proposes a problem-oriented, man-machine modelling process which combines algorithms and software to assist decision makers and planners in dealing with complex socio-economic issues. Includes the specific parts in each of the system's three basic elements: a library, special units, and system control units. (Author/DC)

Kimmel, Howard – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
The needs of mathematics teachers who wish to provide relevance in their lessons, and the need to infuse energy topics into all disciplines in the curriculum at all grade levels, are addressed. It is felt children could be adversely impacted by present energy practice, and education is essential. (MP)

Benson, John; Borkovitz, Debra – Mathematics Teacher, 1982
The construction of a pentagon is divided into three problems, designed to enhance the traditional high school geometry class. The material is seen to serve as a potential springboard for many other activities. It is felt most students could not realistically be expected to solve the third problem by themselves. (MP)
