Descriptors: Adult Counseling, Assertiveness, Communication Skills, Counselors

Lewittes, Hedva J.; Bem, Sandra Lipsitz – Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, 1983
Female undergraduates with low participation levels in mixed sex discussions received training in assertiveness. Pretest and posttest observations of the subjects' behavior suggested that the training was successful, and that lack of assertiveness in the presence of men, rather than lack of substantive knowledge, inhibited women's participation in…

McCord, Joan; Otten, Laura – Criminal Justice and Behavior, 1983
Assessed the relationship between the women's movement and crime. Responses to questionnaires measured aggressiveness, criminal behavior, and attitudes toward sex roles in people (N=577) aged 15 to 60. Males showed greater aggression and more criminality. For both sexes, attitudes toward women's rights were unrelated to criminality. (Author/JAC)
Descriptors: Assertiveness, Crime, Etiology, Feminism
Crockenberg, Vincent – California Journal of Teacher Education, 1982
Assertive discipline is a slick response to the genuine frustrations of teachers trying to manage large classrooms of energetic students. Assertive discipline panders to teachers' defensiveness about their work and ignores significant rights that students have. (CJ)
Descriptors: Assertiveness, Behavior Problems, Classroom Techniques, Discipline

Gruber, James E.; Bjorn, Lars – Work and Occupations: An International Sociological Journal, 1982
Blacks, unmarried or young women, or those with low job status are most likely to be targets of harassment. Harassment adversely affects feelings toward coworkers and supervisors, self-esteem, and life satisfaction, but not job satisfaction, aspirations, or feelings of job competence. (Author/SK)
Descriptors: Assertiveness, Employed Women, Employment Level, Nontraditional Occupations

Lee, Dong Yul; And Others – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1979
Examined effects of assertion training on aggressive adolescents' behavior. Ninth-grade students judged by peers to be aggressive were assigned to assertion training, placebo, and no-treatment control groups. Results showed that assertion training yielded significant improvement on the assertion scale, but had little effect on peer-judged…

Smith, Steven R. – History of Education Quarterly, 1981
Uses examples from seventeenth century English literature to illustrate the ideal master-apprentice relationship and discusses the factors which made the real relationships different. London apprentices were usually literate and they had their own thriving subculture. Literacy weakened the master's traditional authority, and the subculture…

A Note on the Contribution of Assertiveness Training to Job Satisfaction of Professional Librarians.

Stead, Bette Ann; Scamell, Richard W. – Library Quarterly, 1981
Describes an empirical study that examines the relationship between assertiveness and the individual dimensions of job satisfaction for a sample of 68 professional librarians. Results do not support the current emphasis on assertiveness training for overall job satisfaction, although it may be beneficial for low-assertive people. Twenty-four…

Slaney, Robert B. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1978
Examined therapist and client perceptions of transcripts of psychotherapy--one using facilitative conditions as treatment and one using them as intermediate variables leading to assertive training. For therapists, assertive training was estimated as more effective. The behavioral therapist was seen as more expert. For clients, no significant…

Brown, Sandra A.; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1980
Independent expectancies were that alcohol enhances social and physical pleasure, enhances sexual performance and experience, increases power and aggression, increases social assertiveness, and reduces tension. More global factors were related to light consumption. Increased expectation of sexual and aggressive behavior was found in heavier…

Segall, Seth Robert – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1980
Subjects undergoing assertion training experienced a decrease in dream recall and dream pleasantness. The measures of repression did not account significantly for dream recall or pleasantness variance. Findings are more supportive of interference theory than repression theory. (Author)

This study examined the hypothesis that group size can influence whether 9- to 10-year-olds display self-assertive versus self-deprecating responses to interpersonal competition, especially under stress.
