Examined reasons for alcohol use in a sample of detained and adjudicated male juveniles (N=92). Findings indicated that alcohol use not only appeared to be a multidimensional phenomenon, but that it had special meaning as a mood altering substance to help cope with stressful feelings and/or problems. Tested the hypothesis that increasing problem complexity elicits strategies of greater efficiency from older adults. Responses of older and younger adults were compared in a version of "Twenty Questions." No evidence was found that older adults seek more efficient strategies. Investigated use of the Nominal Group Technique (NGT) as an informational input mechanism into the formulation of a Solar Energy Plan. This game uses attribute blocks to encourage the formation of problem-solving strategies, provide drill in the addition of randomly generated numbers, and aid in pupil recognition of pictorial representations of geometric shapes. The game of Yahtzee is analyzed to some extent through methods of elementary probability. Several different problems are posed, and these serve to illustrate both mathematical concerns and game play strategy. As calculators and computer use increases in mathematics education, more educators are recognizing a shift in emphasis from computation to problem solving.
