Tested the relationship between psychological depression and feeling old in 308 older adults. Results indicated that regardless of age, people who felt older were more depressed and less healthy than people who felt younger. Depression was predicted by health and purpose in life, rather than where respondents lived. (JAC)

Examined the psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (MHLC) Scales with alcoholic patients (N=100). The three MHLC Scales appear to measure largely independent dimensions of locus of control beliefs specifically related to health. Factor analyses suggest that the instrument is factorily valid. Examined the relationship between age and perceived health status in 660 adults. Number of symptoms was the strongest predictor of perceived health status employed in this analysis, followed by age, education, and race. Persons over 60 tend to perceive their own health in a significantly more positive fashion. (Author/JAC)

Assessed the relationship of stress to decline in intellectual abilities in women aged 65-92. Found stress was related to the ratio used to estimate decline.
