Bowden, Edgar – Rural Sociol, 1970
Descriptors: Agricultural Trends, Cultural Influences, Diffusion, Farmers

Denison, Daniel R. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1982
Structural equation modeling is applied in conjunction with constrained monotone distance analysis. These alternative methods are used in an evaluation of a social-psychological model derived from Likert's theory of organizational behavior. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Hypothesis Testing, Mathematical Models, Multidimensional Scaling

Macready, George B. – Psychometrika, 1982
A strategy for the pairwise assessment which may be used to evaluate the nature of both "prerequisite" and "transference" relations existing among a set of traits is presented. Both confirmatory and exploratory strategies are presented. An example of how the strategy would be used is presented in the exploratory context.…
Descriptors: Correlation, Data Analysis, Item Analysis, Latent Trait Theory

Bentler, P. N.; Freeman, Edward H. – Psychometrika, 1983
Interpretations regarding the effects of exogenous and endogenous variables on endogenous variables in linear structural equation systems depend upon the convergence of a matrix power series. The test for convergence developed by Joreskog and Sorbom is shown to be only sufficient, not necessary and sufficient. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Mathematical Models, Matrices, Multiple Regression Analysis

Stacy, E. Webb, Jr. – Evaluation and Program Planning: An International Journal, 1981
The use of prevalence data is discussed to help find the best way to separate at-risk and not-at-risk groups. Implications of the data being distributed normally are also discussed and several examples, including one with a nonnormal distribution, are given. (Author/GK)
Descriptors: High Risk Persons, Incidence, Mathematical Models, Mental Health Programs

Cudeck, Robert – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1982
Many models have been proposed for examining factors from several batteries of tests. A model for such an analysis is presented which allows for maintaining the distinction among batteries. A discussion of the computational procedures is given, and examples are provided. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Correlation, Data Analysis, Factor Analysis, Mathematical Models

Williams, Richard H.; Zimmerman, Donald W. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1982
A mathematical link between test reliability and test validity is derived, taking into account the correlation between error scores on a test and error scores on a criterion measure. When this correlation is positive, the "paradoxical" nonmonotonic relation between test reliability and test validity occurs universally. (Author/BW)
Descriptors: Correlation, Error of Measurement, Mathematical Models, Test Reliability

Howell, David C.; McConaughy, Stephanie H. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
It is argued here that the choice of the appropriate method for calculating least squares analysis of variance with unequal sample sizes depends upon the question the experimenter wants to answer about the data. The different questions reflect different null hypotheses. An example is presented using two alternative methods. (Author/BW)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Hypothesis Testing, Least Squares Statistics, Mathematical Models

Hedges, Larry V. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1981
Glass's estimator of effect size, the sample mean difference divided by the sample standard deviation, is studied in the context of an explicit statistical model. The exact distribution of Glass's estimator is obtained and the estimator is shown to have a small sample bias. Alternatives are proposed and discussed. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Error of Measurement, Mathematical Models, Research Design

Weeks, David G.; Bentler, P.M. – Psychometrika, 1982
Restricted multidimensional scaling models, allowing constraints on parameters, are extended to the case of asymmetric data. Examples of several models are provided, using journal citation data. Possible extensions of the models are considered. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Bibliographic Coupling, Data Analysis, Mathematical Models, Matrices

Thompson, Bruce; Pitts, Murray C. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1981
Adequacy coefficients can be derived by calculating the cosines of the angles between factors' actual and theoretically expected locations within factor space. The use of adequacy coefficients during instrument development is discussed. The development of an instrument to measure thinking interests provides a heuristic framework for the…
Descriptors: Cognitive Style, Factor Analysis, Mathematical Models, Test Construction

McDonald, Roderick P. – Psychometrika, 1981
An expression is given for weighted least squares estimators of oblique common factors of factor analyses, constrained to have the same covariance matrix as the factors they estimate. A proof of the uniqueness of the solution is given. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Analysis of Covariance, Factor Analysis, Least Squares Statistics, Mathematical Models

Lane, David M. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1981
Problems in testing main effects in regression analysis when there is interaction are discussed. A method by which main effects can be tested independently of the interaction is developed and compared with the hierarchical method. The method provides control of the type I error rate, but is quite conservative. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Aptitude Treatment Interaction, Data Analysis, Hypothesis Testing, Mathematical Models
Steen, Lynn Arthur – Science News, 1979
Describes some unsolved problems in geometry, as well as some recently solved ones. Indicates that each advance generates more problems than it solves, thus ensuring a constant growth in unsolved problems. (GA)
Descriptors: Geometric Concepts, Geometry, Mathematical Models, Mathematics

Kraemer, Helena Chmura – Psychometrika, 1981
Limitations and extensions of Feldt's approach to testing the equality of Cronbach's alpha coefficients in independent and matched samples are discussed. In particular, this approach is used to test equality of intraclass correlation coefficients. (Author)
