Judgments about the effectiveness of community mental health center (CMHC) directors are affected by the roles the judges have in relation to the centers. CMHC executives were similar to clinical colleagues and different from governing board members in the importance they placed on things that characterize the effective CMHC administrator. (Author)

Describes a study testing Korman's Model of Work Behavior which hypothesized that individuals will seek out and be satisfied with those roles that are most consistent with their self-evaluations or self-cognitions. This study reports student personnel officers' attitudes and perceptions of their work environment and management styles. These perceptions are compared with those of other college administrators. Vallas is credited with turning around the Chicago public school system during his tenure as superintendent from 1995 to 2001. While women are making some progress, the structure of employment in higher education is highly resistant to change. Concern for women's issues is no longer a high priority for educational leaders. Both administrators and women themselves must be committed to the advancement of women in higher education. (MSE)

The 1989 followup to a 1979 study of possible trends in the selection of administrators, in response to a 1965 federal executive order, is reported. A trend toward selecting external candidates was found to have continued, with the proportion of women selected increasing very little. (MSE)
