Fisk, Robert S. – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1975
Four problems in which elementary mathematics can be used in constructing models are described. (SD)
Descriptors: Algebra, Calculus, College Mathematics, Higher Education
Woods, D. R.; And Others – Engineering Education, 1975
Describes a non-credit tutorial course held for engineering students to improve their skill in problem solving. In the group sessions, each student writes his approach to a given problem on a transparency; the class then analyzes the various approaches while viewing them on overhead projectors. (MLH)
Descriptors: College Science, Course Descriptions, Engineering Education, Higher Education

Seymour, Lowell A.; Padberg, Lawrence F. – Science Education, 1975
Twenty-two tenth grade biology classes performed a simulated problem solving game. Half of each class completed the exercise first as individuals and then in small groups; the other half reversed this order. Results showed that group work preceded by individual work was the most effective arrangement. (MLH)

Lepowsky, William L. – Mathematics Teacher, 1976
The similarity between two apparently dissimilar problems is explored. Pascal's triangle is involved. (SD)

Strauss, Aaron – Mathematics Teacher, 1976
The early development of computers and computer technology is traced, and the relationship of the computer and mathematics is discussed. (SD)

Dillon, Stephen V.; Franks, David D. – Educational Forum, 1975
The authors contend that the transmission-of-knowledge model is more apt to condition learners to defend themselves from problems than it is to develop in learners an ability to cope with their problems. (Author)

Enzer, Norbert B. – Journal of Research and Development in Education, 1975
Article focused upon the shared knowledge and perspective about child development and the needs of children necessary to build a partnership between school and home. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Behavior Change, Case Studies, Parent Child Relationship, Parent Participation
Barkley, Margaret V. – Illinois Teacher of Home Economics, 1975
The tab device, a testing instrument in which the student studies the situation and selects the tab which he believes will solve the problem, offers a testing method with immediate feedback about his decision. A sample tab device testing instrument is included. (MW)

Peterson, William D. – Research in Higher Education, 1975
Twenty-six college and university presidents were interviewed and asked to report at least four incidents which they felt had been critical to their effectiveness as presidents. The great majority of the incidents (94.6percent) were found to involve the internal affairs of the institution. (Editor/PG)

Pereira-Mendoza, Lionel – Arithmetic Teacher, 1975
Investigations which employ a search for a number pattern as an approach to solving a geometry problem are discussed. Four problems are presented, with suggestions for testing simple cases, discussion questions, organizing information, and conclusions to be drawn. (MNS)
Descriptors: Diagrams, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics, Geometric Concepts

Dean, Peter G. – School Science and Mathematics, 1975
Outlines the use of computer programs in modeling and simulation to provide a link between science and mathematics education. (GS)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Curriculum Development, Instruction, Integrated Curriculum

Francis, Richard L. – Mathematics Teacher, 1975
The author observes that checking the closure property is redundant for most number systems and therefore hard for students to understand. He defines several systems which are not closed, develops two concepts related to closure, and provides many related examples. (SD)
Descriptors: Algebra, Deduction, Instruction, Integers
