When denied a position in favor of a minority with lower scores and grades, some White males complain that they have achieved these scores and grades through their own efforts. A variety of factors which influence scores and grades a person achieves are taken into consideration. The least of the factors is shown to be the person's effort. (JN)

Data on the nature and distribution of school knowledge were gathered in an investigation of curriculum, pedagogy, and pupil evaluation practices in five elementary schools differentiated by social class. Regardless of achievement level, rural Appalachian children possess a significantly more negative self-concept, particularly in school-related and intellectual activities, than do urban children. This research study explores changes in the geographic dispersal of social classes in Philadelphia over a 20-year period. Discussed are the changes which occurred between the central city and its suburbs and those which occurred among suburban municipalities.
