The Draw-a-Design and Draw-a-Child, two subtests of the McCarthy Scales, are the best-normed drawing tests for children aged two and a half to eight and a half years but have no age-corrected deviation scaled scores available for interpretation. Two strategies for teaching studio art are compared. In an atomistic strategy, basic drawing and design are taught by dividing learning contents into various component parts--e.g., perspective exercises, value scales, color wheels--and addressing them one at a time.
