This study investigated the relationship between several Piagetian abilities and an information processing capacity, and first-grade children's performance on verbal addition and subtraction problems. Results pointed to a sometimes small but consistent relationship between possession of a cognitive ability and solving an arithmetic problem. (MP)

An operational definition of careless errors was provided and used in an investigation of 50 children attending an international primary school in Lae, Papua New Guinea. Results indicated that mathematically competent and confident children tend to make a greater proportion of errors than other children. (MP)

The mathematical problem-solving attitudes of fourth- grade pupils and teachers as related to pupil performance was investigated. Results suggest that most fourth-grade students possess favorable attitudes toward problem solving, and that teachers should continue to foster favorable student reactions toward problem solving.
