Ruppel, Elizabeth – Mathematics Teacher, 1982
It has been found that students gain much greater insight into routine calculations with business formulas when such work is viewed in the light of graphing concepts. Ten problems are presented that illustrate how three specific objectives in a unit on graphing in a business mathematics course have been met. (MP)

Dunagan, Linda – Teacher, 1980
The two-hour learning activity described here is designed to interest students in graphing by having them use data about themselves. Students compete in physical and mental activities, then record and graph their scores. (SJL)

Turnau, Stefan – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1980
Approaches to developing a good mathematics textbook for the junior high student are discussed, with the pitfalls and difficulties reviewed. Examples from new Polish textbooks are presented to illustrate possible solutions. (MP)

Fry, Edward – Journal of Reading, 1981
Presents a taxonomy of graphs, including lineal, quantitative, spatial, pictorial, hypothetical, and omitted graphs. Provides illustrations of each kind of graph and suggests that reading teachers take the responsibility for teaching graph reading and drawing skills. (MKM)

Kalman, Dan; Mitchell, Charles E. – School Science and Mathematics, 1981
An alternative application of logarithms in the high school algebra curriculum that is not undermined by the existence and widespread availability of calculators is presented. The importance and use of linear relationships are underscored in the proposed lessons. (MP)

Waller, Robert H. W. – Instructional Science, 1979
Adapts a metaphor to draw attention to four aspects of the relationship between originator and user, and the communication medium: the problem of encoding information in graphic form, diagrams as tools for enquiry and thought, illustrations as aids to learning, and illustrations as aids to problem solving. Leong, Alice – Special Libraries, 1979
Distinguishes five main categories of special libraries in Singapore: those of private organizations, foreign governments, government departments, statutory boards, and regional organizations. Statistical data are provided for library holdings, professional staff employment, and subject profiles, and suggestions for improving various aspects of…

Friedler, Yael; McFarlane, Angela E. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1997
Presents a study that introduces data logging using portable computers as part of an investigative approach to science. Working with control and experimental classes of 14- and 16-year-olds, results suggest that data logging can have an impact on graphing skills at age 14 which is not necessarily repeatable at age 16. Hurwitz, Marsha – Mathematics Teacher, 1997
Describes a lesson that uses the graphing calculator to prompt the proof of the mean-value theorem. Students, through guided questioning, proposed the idea of using a difference function to find where a tangent line is parallel to a secant line. Through the use of graphing technology, students conjectured the essential fact that the constructed…

Vonder Embse, Charles – Mathematics Teacher, 1997
Describes computer or calculator-graphing technology to develop parametric representations which help students connect mathematical topics from algebra and trigonometry through algebraic, graphical, and numerical representations. Computer or calculator graphing utilities instantly transform algebraic expressions into visual and numerical displays…
