Berk, Ronald A. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1978
Three formulae developed to correct item-total correlations for spuriousness were evaluated. Relationships among corrected, uncorrected, and item-remainder correlations were determined by computing sets of mean, minimum, and maximum deviation coefficients and Spearman rank correlations for nine test lengths. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Correlation, Intermediate Grades, Item Analysis, Test Construction

Andrich, David – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1978
A generalization of the Rasch model is employed to quantify statements on a scale in the Thurstone tradition, as well as to measure a person's attitudes in the Likert tradition. An illustration of the technique is provided. (JKS)
Descriptors: Attitude Measures, Item Analysis, Measurement Techniques, Psychometrics

Huck, Schuyler W. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1978
A modification of Hoyt's analysis of variance model for test analysis was proposed by Lu. A difficulty that may be encountered in using Lu's modification is examined, and a solution is proposed. (JKS)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Difficulty Level, Item Analysis, Test Items

Aiken, Lewis R. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1978
A general FORTRAN computer program for analyzing categorical or frequency data obtained from questionnaires is described. A variety of descriptive statistics, chi square, Kendall's tau and Cramer's statistic are provided. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Computer Programs, Expectancy Tables, Item Analysis, Questionnaires

Vegelius, Jan – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1977
Generalizations of the G index as a measure of similarity between persons beyond the dichotomous situation are discussed. An attempt is made to present a generalization that does not require dichotomization of the items for cases where the number of response alternatives may differ. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Correlation, Item Analysis, Measurement Techniques, Multidimensional Scaling

Kuncel, Ruth Boutin – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1977
A method to improve personality inventory validity by presenting positively keyed items from a single trait in descending order of endorsement and encouraging subjects to respond in terms of the resulting Guttman scale is presented. Experimental results show increases in reliability and validity. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Adults, Item Analysis, Personality Measures, Postsecondary Education

Miller, Lucy Jane; Sprong, Tracy A. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1986
Ten psychometric criteria (such as item analysis, concurrent validity, and interexaminer reliability) were used to compare four preschool screening tests: "Comprehensive Identification Process", "Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning--Revised" (Dial--R), "Denver Developmental Screening Test", and…
Descriptors: Disabilities, Item Analysis, Preschool Education, Screening Tests

Harris, Deborah J.; Kolen, Michael J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1988
Three methods of estimating point-biserial correlation coefficient standard errors were compared: (1) assuming normality; (2) not assuming normality; and (3) bootstrapping. Although errors estimated assuming normality were biased, such estimates were less variable and easier to compute, suggesting that this might be the method of choice in some…
Descriptors: Error of Measurement, Estimation (Mathematics), Item Analysis, Statistical Analysis

Dorans, Neil J.; Kulick, Edward – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1986
The standardization method for assessing unexpected differential item performance or differential item functioning is introduced. Findings of five studies are summarized, in which the statistical method of standardization is used to look for unexpected differences in item performance across different subpopulations of the Scholastic Aptitude Test.…
Descriptors: Groups, Item Analysis, Sociometric Techniques, Standardized Tests

Maxwell, Scott E.; Delaney, Harold D. – Psychological Bulletin, 1985
Uses principles of latent trait theory to derive conditions under which mean differences between groups on an observed variable are in fact indicative of mean differences on an underlying construct. Pays particular attention to the logistic curve as a model for describing the relation between the observed variable and the construct. (Author/CB)
Descriptors: Item Analysis, Latent Trait Theory, Psychometrics, Statistical Analysis

Burgess, Philip M.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Reevaluated findings for subtle items in the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory D Scale in 214 subjects based on the distinction between item subtlety and face validity. Results indicated that the inclusion of nonpathological items in the D scale did not lead to greater predictive validity of depression criteria. (LLL)
Descriptors: Content Analysis, Depression (Psychology), Item Analysis, Males

Devito, Anthony J.; Kubis, Joseph F. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1983
Alternate forms of the state anxiety (A-State) and trait anxiety (A-Trait) scales of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were constructed by dividing the 20 items of each scale into two briefer forms having 10 items each. The alternate forms and item statistics are presented. (Author/BW)
Descriptors: Anxiety, Higher Education, Item Analysis, Personality Measures

Descriptors: Criterion Referenced Tests, Item Analysis, Test Construction, Test Reliability
Townson, Michael – Linguistik und Didaktik, 1971
Descriptors: Classification, Educational Diagnosis, Error Patterns, Item Analysis

Leicht, Kenneth L.; Cashen, Valjean M. – Journal of Educational Research, 1972
Study asks whether laboratory findings, that isolation of an item facilitates its recall, extend to formal educational settings. (Authors)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Item Analysis, Performance Factors, Questioning Techniques
