O'Brien, Thomas C.; Casey, Shirley A. – School Science and Mathematics, 1983
Eighty-seven pupils in grades 4-6 completed five multiplication examples and wrote a problem for another example. They were reasonably proficient, with mean scores of 82 percent in grade 4, 75 percent in grade 5, and 97 percent in grade 6. They did less well on developing a problem. (MNS)

Mayer, Richard E. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1983
Subjects listened to a short science passage one, two, or three times. Overall amount recalled increased with number of presentations, but recall of conceptual principles and related information increased sharply with repetition, whereas recall of formal equations and concrete analogies did not. Advance organizers functioned similarly. (Author/PN)

Bartalo, Donald B. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1983
It is concluded: (1) elementary school students enjoy doing problems, but have trouble thinking them out; (2) students need to work on a variety of types; (3) calculator use can definitely help students become better; and (4) students need experience in group work. Details of the instructional approach used are provided. (MP)

Marriner, Ann – Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing, 1983
Planning is the key to time management. Individuals and organizations should consider where they are now, where they want to be, and when and how they are going to get there. Goals must be set and priorities determined. (Author/SSH)

Williams, Sharon A.; And Others – International Journal of Aging and Human Development, 1983
Asked older individuals (N=24) questions regarding which of their cognitive abilities have changed with age. Subjects' reports about memory corresponded with previous research, i.e., memory decreases with increasing age. For problem-solving abilities, subjects' reports did not correspond with research, i.e., abilities increased with age. Factors…

Carpenter, T. P.; And Others – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1983
The effect of instruction in addition and subtraction concepts and skills on the processes first-grade pupils use to solve verbal problems was studied. Children represented solutions in individual interviews. Results indicated pupils shifted from a concrete direct modeling approach to a more unified conception that incorporated symbolic…

Thompson, Robert C. – American Mathematical Monthly, 1983
The demise of mathematics of finance as a subject is discussed and a resurgence is seen as possible, but the traditional instructional presentation is seen as in need of modernization. Financial mathematics is referred to as a beautiful subject when inflation is incorporated, provided that calculators are used in computations. (Author/MP)

Tucker, Benny F.; Bazik, Edna F. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1983
Problem-solving situations are presented in various settings--a park (levels 1-2), a carnival (levels 2-4), a map (levels 4-6), and a hardware store (levels 7-8). Each page is designed to be reproduced and used for discussion. (MNS)

Lee, Seong-Soo – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1982
Tenth-grade students (n=144) received training on one of three processing methods: coding-mapping (simultaneous), coding only, or decision tree (sequential). The induced simultaneous processing strategy worked optimally under rule learning, while the sequential strategy was difficult to induce and/or not optimal for rule-learning operations.…

Hartley, Alan A.; Anderson, Joan Wilson – Journal of Gerontology, 1983
Tested the hypothesis that increased task difficulty elicits more efficient problem-solving strategies from older adults, using "Twenty Questions" tasks with either 64 or 10,000 possible solutions. Although younger adults were more efficient, there was not evidence that task difficulty affected problem-solving for either age group. (Author/JAC)

Cunningham, James W.; Ballew, Hunter – Reading Teacher, 1983
Reports on a study that examined which of four major components of word problem solving ability was currently keeping a student from solving word problems. Reviews two recent series of supplementary materials that show promise for helping teachers improve their students' problem interpretation. (FL)

Dunne, Thomas O'Neill; Maurer, Rick – NASSP Bulletin, 1982
Asserts that the quality circle management technique is an exciting and challenging way to improve staff satisfaction and the quality of service. Defines the quality circle concept, outlines steps school administrators should take to establish quality circles, and warns of possible pitfalls. (Author/PGD)

Kamii, Constance – Phi Delta Kappan, 1982
Too many approaches to mathematics instruction at the elementary level focus only on the production of correct answers rather than on the development of mathematical thinking skills. Author urges encouragement of children's own thought processes. (Author/PGD)

Mackenzie, Richard S.; And Others – Journal of Dental Education, 1982
An investigation of the use of microfiche to replace bulky clinical testing materials is reported. With each student serving as both experimental subject and control, taking each kind of test, student preferred the nonmicrofiche form. No difference was found in time taken for testing or resulting grades. Sequence was significant, however.…
