Papp, F. J. – School Science and Mathematics, 1977
The vast majority of people are most familiar with arithmetic in base ten. This article presents a follow-up on a problem with several divisibility tests valid in base ten which are related to Freitag's general test and which follow directly from it. Base 13 is also explored. (Author/MA)

Leff, Harvey S. – American Journal of Physics, 1978
Presents a simple model whereby the work per cycle done on an external agent, and a sand reservoir, by a reversible heat engine can be analyzed explicitly. (Author/SL)
Descriptors: College Science, Heat, Higher Education, Instructional Materials
Voltmer, David R. – Educational Research and Methods, 1977
Discusses the use of Problem-Solving Laboratory (PSL) courses for giving engineering students authentic design experience and knowledge of how to go about solving real world problems. (SL)

Champagne, Audrey B.; Klopfer, Leopold E. – Science Education, 1977
A historical analysis reveals that the journal has become increasingly the organ of college and university science educators, fewer women now contribute articles, and that Dewey's focus on reflective thinking and problem solving has continued to appeal to science educators. (CP)

Corry, James M.; Gray, Bryan J. – Health Education (Washington D.C.), 1977
In order to avoid endlessing recurring "crises cycles" in the areas of physical and mental health, programs dealing with problems in these areas must be comprehensive, humanistically oriented, and encourage the development of mental health skills. (MJB)

Calhoun, George, Jr. – Clearing House, 1977
This research attempts to show a relationship between the types of crimes juvenile delinquents commit and their socioeconomic status. (Author/RK)

Piele, Donald T.; Wood, Larry E. – Creative Computing, 1977
Described are random, systematic, and guided trial-and-error strategies for problem-solving with a computer. (JH)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Computer Programs, Computers, Elementary Secondary Education
Jensen, Lloyd – Teaching Political Science, 1977
Describes a guided design systems approach to teaching political science which combines programmed instruction materials with group problem solving. Using simulated international problems, this approach takes the student through a carefully designed sequence of exercises to improve decision-making skills. (Author/JR)

Horwitz, Allan – Social Forces, 1977
Compares the power of cultural variables and structural variables to predict the entry into psychiatric treatment. Uses the concept of the social network to show that structural relationships, in addition to the culture of the different social classes, are important predictors of psychiatric labels and referrals, and severity and duration of…

Pink, William T. – Journal of Educational Thought, 1977
Details the structural weaknesses of contemporary educational programming in the urban setting. Argues that the separate disciplinary approach to what are seen as multi disciplinary problems is dysfunctional and that the lack of systematic evaluation procedures leads inevitably to the frustration of desired program goals. (Editor/RK)

Haggard, Gary; Schonberger, Ann Koch – Arithmetic Teacher, 1977
The paper-and-pencil game "Tri" is described. The authors argue that students gain logical skills by playing the game, and that the game lends itself to the introduction of diverse mathematical ideas. (SD)

Daly, D. W.; And Others – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1977
This paper describes the nature and use of a computer-assisted sequence of instruction in college-level mathematics. Units in differential and integral calculus and geometry are described. The authors claim that students acquire increased confidence in their knowledge and problem-solving ability. (SD)

Moran, Joseph J. – Child Study Journal, 1976
Third grade children were trained in component processes of problem solving strategies and were subsequently tested on ability to transfer the strategies to novel situations. Results indicate that, contrary to the Piagetian position, generalizable problem solving strategies were acquired at this age level. (Author/GO)

Siegler, Robert S.; Atlas, Marshall – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1976
Two experiments demonstrate that 10- and 13-year-olds can learn to detect interactive patterns in data. Results also indicate the advantages of creating formal models of solution strategies and using them as a basis for instructional procedures. (Author/DEP)
