Willcutt, Bob – Arithmetic Teacher, 1980
A new version of a standard old problem is presented. Ways of solving, extending, and continuing the problem that make it applicable to many grade levels are discussed. (MK)

Schuncke, George M.; Hoffman, Stevie – Social Studies, 1980
Considers how elementary school classroom teachers can employ exploration methods (gathering, evaluation, and synthesis of data related to a specific topic) to help students develop readiness for intellectually complex problem solving. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Discovery Learning, Educational Objectives, Elementary Education, Learning Activities
Pilon, Daniel H. – New Directions for Institutional Advancement, 1981
External assistance in the form of consultation is seen as a major ingredient in the design and conduct of institutional advancement programs at many small colleges. Suggestions to help small college institutional advancement personnel to make the best possible use of consultants are provided. (MLW)

Goodwin, Kathryn S.; Turner, Ralph R. – International Journal of Behavioral Development, 1981
Examined effects of cognitive focusing training in early and late concrete operational children. Focusing was manifested by the late concrete operational children regardless of whether or not they had been trained. The amount of negative feedback and the nature of the probe techniques affected the manifestation of focusing. (Author/DB)

Glenberg, Arthur M.; Smith, Steven M. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1981
States that recall of items given spaced repetitions is generally superior to recall of items given immediate repetitions. Reports on a test of Jacobi's hypothesis that this spacing effect is explained by the distinction between problem solving and remembering. Suggests that the effect cannot be explained solely by this distinction. (Author/MES)

Wagner, Sigrid – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1981
This study investigated students' understanding of two mathematical relations as measured by conservation tasks. Thirty students were interviewed, half each at the middle and high school levels. The results suggest that the ability to conserve equation or function varies among pupils of different ages, sexes, and mathematical backgrounds. (MP)
Descriptors: Algebra, Cognitive Processes, Conservation (Concept), Educational Research
Perspectives in Computing, 1981
Examples of computer applications to solving real-world problems as generated by students at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) are featured. (MP)
Descriptors: Computer Programs, Computer Science, Graduate Study, Higher Education

Galda, Klaus – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1981
The history of formal mathematical proofs is sketched out, starting with the Greeks. Included in this document is a chronological guide to mathematics and the world, highlighting major events in the world and important mathematicians in corresponding times. (MP)
Descriptors: Mathematical Concepts, Mathematical Logic, Mathematicians, Mathematics

Brett, William J. – American Biology Teacher, 1979
Presents experiments to introduce students to the phenomenon of biological rhythmicity and to reinforce the fact that there are differences in the physiology of human beings. (Author/MA)
Descriptors: Biology, Instructional Materials, Laboratory Experiments, Physiology

Kjeseth, Steve – School Science and Mathematics, 1979
A technique is illustrated for solving relative motion problems using a maneuvering board and vector algebra. The technique can be used to visually illustrate properties of vector algebra in a non-theoretical context. (MP)
Descriptors: Algebra, Instruction, Learning Activities, Navigation

Cohen, Martin P. – School Science and Mathematics, 1979
The purpose of this study was to examine tendencies for students to be more successful in solving verbal problems based on situations for which they possess measured interest. (MP)

Lappan, Glenda; Winter, M. J. – School Science and Mathematics, 1979
Five calculator activities are described that are designed to explore ordered operations. Suggestions are given on mathematical objectives, strategies for solving, and possible extensions or follow-up activities. (MP)
Descriptors: Calculators, Computation, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics

Hayes, David T. – School Science and Mathematics, 1979
Problems are discussed in which addition facts are presented using words instead of numbers. The letters are then replaced by numbers that will make the addition problems correct. (MP)
Descriptors: Addition, Instruction, Learning Activities, Number Concepts

McPhail, Irving P. – Journal of Reading, 1981
Teaching students test wiseness can have a number of positive results, including improving the validity of the tests themselves and improving the scores of minority students on tests. (AEA)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Elementary Education, Minority Groups, Problem Solving
Piemonte, Charles – Curriculum Review, 1981
The author examines the trend, and some of the interdisciplinary research supporting it, toward the development of problem solving competency, rather than content-based skills, as the central concern in mathematics education. (SJL)
