Although recent studies are well designed, treatments remain ineffective. Treatment ineffectiveness may be due to insufficient pilot (clinical) work and premature freezing of techniques into group programs. Process variables must be shown to effect outcome. A representative sample (N=1988) of members of the two main teachers' organizations in Norway were mailed questionnaires in the spring of 1977 regarding their past and present smoking habits, and 92 percent responded. The percentage of daily smokers among the teachers was approximately half of that found in the general population. (BRR)

Subjects were assigned to conditions based on smoking rates: self-monitoring nicotine plus health hazard information; self-monitoring cigarettes plus health information; and self-monitoring cigarettes with no health information. Nicotine self-monitoring groups showed greater reactivity. Exposure to health hazard information had no effect. (Author)

When eight black and eight white children tried to purchase cigarettes in California, where purchase by minors is illegal, black children were sold cigarettes significantly more often, especially in black neighborhoods and by nonblack clerks, and adult customers made no effort to stop them. Reports a study that investigated the prevalence of tobacco use by high school students (n=10,904) and the usual source of cigarettes. Survey data indicated that smoking increased from 1991-95. Most students bought cigarettes from vending machines, one-third borrowed them from someone else, and 15% had someone else buy them. (SM)
