A national survey of teachers shows that nearly two-thirds of United States teachers endorse merit pay concept. The survey centered on three areas: pegging salary increases to classroom effectiveness, who should evaluate salary increases, and how to determine raises. (MD)

Techniques teachers use to gain influence in their work places were examined. Techniques of employee influence appeared to fall into categories according to the way that they provide or deny legitimacy to the organization's formal and informal rules or to its administrators. (CJ)

Little striking difference was found between students choosing psychiatry as a first career choice and those choosing it second or third. Results imply recruiting students in the last two groups for psychiatry specialization may be difficult, based on their attitudes about scientific advancement and social status in the profession. Comments on Reid and Hanrahan's article ("Recent Evaluations of Social Work: Grounds for Optimism," July 1982) reviewing social work research. Four authors discuss and evaluate the validity of the conclusions reached and the methodology needed for social work research. A reply by Reid and Hanrahan is included. (JAC)

A plan for promoting excellence in teaching is proposed, which would designate 10 to 15 percent of a school's staff "distinguished teachers." This group would receive salary increases and would be staggered over the years. Parents, former students, administrators, and other teachers would help select the group. (PP)

Three analyses were used to determine "core" journals in the field of higher education: frequency of publishing higher education focused articles, frequency of citation to key works in higher education, and journal rankings by higher education professionals. Little correspondence is found among the results of the three strategies. (Author/MSE)

Evaluated self and organizational responses of 384 middle level managers. Compared groups of high and low likelihood of promotion and groups of varying degrees of mutuality. Found these groups are independent. Suggests both likelihood of promotion and mutuality appear useful in clarifying managerial work motivation. (Author/JAC)

Examines the relative importance of externally and internally oriented achievement activities and the role of ascriptive factors for promotion and salary decisions in a large state university. Data are consistent with the hypothesis that the impact of these variables depends upon the degree of consensus among academic fields. (NEC)

Sampled members of two professional societies which supported the development of gerontology as a profession. Enthusiasm for this development varied with educational attainment of the respondent. Those with graduate degrees generally preferred gerontology as a specialization within a traditional profession. (Author/JAC)
