Rouse, William B.; Rouse, Sandra H. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1978
A library network model is reviewed and a derivation is presented that requires fewer assumptions and allows more robust representations of library networks. (Author)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Library Networks, Mathematical Models, Performance

Long, Cliff – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1976
Instructions are given for building a flexible model used for illustrating an elliptic paraboloid, a parabolic cylinder, and a hyperbolic paraboloid. (DT)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Geometry, Higher Education, Instruction
Peer reviewed Peer reviewed
Chemical and Engineering News, 1978
A simple formula and accompanying set of factors has been developed to estimate the average salary of groups of chemists with common characteristics. Five major characteristics in determining salaries are presented: years of experience, highest degree, type of employer, work function, and sex. Tables and a sample problem are included. (MA)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Degrees (Academic), Employment, Mathematical Models

Guy, Louis-Gavet – Information Processing and Management, 1977
A new method for concentrating keywords of a thesaurus, based on a mathematical study of the distribution of characters in a defined natural language. (Author/KP)
Descriptors: Computer Programs, Databases, Information Retrieval, Information Storage

Marney, John – Journal of the Chinese Language Teachers Association, 1977
This article presents some alternative formulae for Chinese-Western conversion of dates. (CHK)
Descriptors: Chinese, Chinese Culture, Mathematical Models, Number Concepts

Hawkins, Vincent J. – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
A model, easily constructed by students, is used to assist in seeking basic Pythagorean identities used to prove more complex ones. (MNS)
Descriptors: Mathematical Models, Mathematics Instruction, Secondary Education, Secondary School Mathematics

Egghe, L. – Journal of Documentation, 1988
Reviews the bibliometric laws of Bradford, Leimkuhler, Mandelbrot, Lotka, Brookes, and Zipf, and classifies them in two groups, based on the use of mathematical logic and equivalency. (8 references) (CLB)
Descriptors: Bibliometrics, Classification, Mathematical Logic, Mathematical Models

Nicholls, Paul Travis – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1987
Describes and compares eight methods of estimating the parameters of the Zipf distribution. (CLB)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Estimation (Mathematics), Mathematical Models, Predictive Measurement

Akaike, Hirotugu – Psychometrika, 1987
The Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) was introduced to extend the method of maximum likelihood to the multimodel situation. Use of the AIC in factor analysis is interesting when it is viewed as the choice of a Bayesian model; thus, wider applications of AIC are possible. (Author/GDC)
Descriptors: Bayesian Statistics, Factor Analysis, Mathematical Models, Maximum Likelihood Statistics

Musa, F. A. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1986
The production of high quality Arabic-English text poses technical problems that are caused mainly by the high degree of syntactical flexibility which characterizes the Arabic language. This article describes a system which offers some solutions to the problems encountered in processing bilingual Arabic-English text. (Author/EM)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Arabic, English, Mathematical Models

Kingma, Johannes; Reuvekanp, Johan – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1986
A nonparametric Mokken scale analysis and program is described. Three procedures of scaling (a search procedure, evaluation of the whole set of items as a scale, and extension of an existing scale) provided a coefficient of scalability for all the items together that satisfy the criteria of the Mokken model. (Author/LMO)
Descriptors: Computer Software, Input Output, Mathematical Models, Microcomputers

Lance, Charles E. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1986
The logic and procedures underlying a disturbance term regression test of logical consistency for structural models are reviewed for recursive and nonrecursive designs. It is shown that in a simple three-variable, complete mediational case the test procedure is mathematically equivalent to a part correlation. (Author/LMO)
Descriptors: Correlation, Hypothesis Testing, Mathematical Models, Matrices
Cook, Ronald J. – Momentum, 1985
Proposes a model to help Catholic school budget planners understand a series of significant factors which can predict enrollment and stabilize the budget process. Details the reliability of the model through eight successive years of testing at Bishop Foley High School in Detroit. (CBC)
Descriptors: Budgeting, Catholic Schools, Elementary Secondary Education, Enrollment Projections

Wilcox, Rand R. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1985
A new method of measuring item bias based on the latent class model proposed by the author is suggested. A test for item bias is also suggested that is based on standard asymptotic results. (Author/DWH)
Descriptors: Mathematical Models, Measurement Techniques, Statistical Analysis, Test Bias

Serlin, Ronald C.; Marascuilo, Leonard A. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1983
Two alternatives to the problems of conducting planned and post hoc comparisons in tests of concordance and discordance for G groups of judges are examined. The two models are illustrated using existing data. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Attitude Measures, Comparative Analysis, Interrater Reliability, Mathematical Models
