The authors investigated a science course which was divided into two sections, one "student-structured" and one "teacher-structured." Data indicate that the "student-structured" environment enhanced the students' desire to participate in scientific activities, and their belief that they were capable of doing so. (JT)

Among the numerous problems faced by substitute teachers are: (1) lack of adequate lesson plans left by the regular teacher; (2) lack of adequate preparation for substitute teaching by schools of education; and (3) low expectations as to what a substitute teacher will be able to teach. A study found that college students may have a misplaced confidence in their ability to assess their own fitness and plan their own exercise programs.
