McMann, Francis C.; McMann, Carolyn Jepsen – Social Education, 1987
This article demonstrates how to construct two types of graphs, the line plot, and the stem and leaf plot. States that these graphing techniques improve students' ability to understand tabular data. An instructional model is presented for directing lessons which use the two types of graphs. (JDH)
Descriptors: Classification, Data, Data Analysis, Graphs

Peterson, Lorna; Coniglio, Jamie W. – RQ, 1987
Library user guides from seven large academic libraries were examined for readability using microcomputer software for analysis. Results indicated that most guides are written at or above a reading level of grade 12. Appendices summarize readability formulas and depict in a composite graph the levels of all of the guides examined. (16 references)…

Evans, I. Gwyn – Mathematics in School, 1986
Provides an algorithm for determining the median and quartiles of discrete data sets. Describes the graphical equivalent of the numerical method. (JM)
Descriptors: Algorithms, College Mathematics, Graphs, Mathematics Education

Sellen, Mary K. – College and Research Libraries, 1984
Citation analyses of articles appearing in "College and Research Libraries" (C&RL) and "Journal of Academic Librarianship" (JAL) for 1981 reveal that academic librarians use more periodical articles than monographs in research, C&RL and JAL reference themselves, majority of references in periodical and monograph form…

Maia, M. J. F.; Maia, M. D. – Journal of Documentation, 1984
It is shown that there is no ambiguity in Bradford's theory of distribution. Starting with two basic postulates laid down by Bradford, a mathematical expression is derived such that its curve agrees with the experimentally plotted data for periodicals in fields of applied geophysics and lubrication. Five references are listed. (Author/EJS)
Descriptors: Equations (Mathematics), Geophysics, Graphs, Hypothesis Testing
Peterson, Becky K. – Business Education World, 1984
Presents a summary of research on the effect of tabular and graphic presentation on reader reaction, reader retention, and reading time that found that comprehension, reaction, and reading time are enhanced by graphic aids. (JOW)
Descriptors: Graphs, Reader Response, Reading Rate, Reading Research

Fry, Christine L. – International Journal of Aging and Human Development, 1983
Presents an alternative approach to the life cycle which avoids the creation of monolithic age categories and exclusive reliance upon the unidimensional index of chronological age. Data exemplify the potential utility of age status graphing in understanding the life cycle. (JAC)
Descriptors: Adults, Age, Aging (Individuals), Classification

Shaw, Jean M. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1984
Reasons for having students make graphs are noted. Then specific graphing topics and materials appropriate for young learners are presented, including life-sized, floor, clothespin, felt-face, block, and magnetic graphs, and polls of pupils. (MNS)
Descriptors: Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics, Graphs, Learning Activities
Darian, Steven – ABCA Bulletin, 1983
Discusses the functions of using visuals in communicating and comprehending information. (AEA)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Business Communication, Flow Charts, Graphs
Cooper, Carol – Outlook, 1975
Teachers of an integrated elementary classroom used cookie-sharing time as a learning experience for students. Responsible for dividing varying amounts of cookies daily, the students learned to translate their experiences to graphs of differing sophistication and analyses. Further interpretation and application were done by individual students…
