This is a reaction to papers by Kerr and Frankel, in this same issue, using examples from education and rehabilitation. Status differential is viewed as a prerequisite for the development of independence and maturity. (Author)

Retired school superintendents were asked to comment on problems and sources of pride during their careers. The former superintendents agreed with presently employed colleagues (surveyed in a companion study) on many points; most said their work had been a rewarding experience. Trends affecting job demands are noted. (PP)

Finds that rural teachers have more experience than previously, are increasingly male, there is a serious mismatch between teacher expectations and current conditions, and lack of public interest and support has had a damaging effect on today's rural teachers. There is very little discussion of the structure of the teaching profession and the implications of that structure for the teacher's professional identity. A model of the teacher labor market is of importance to a theoretical understanding and to an appreciation of structural changes that face teachers in the future. (CJ)

A two-year study of the factors suspected of influencing the fairness of the peer review system (including the prestige of an institutional affiliation and the influence this might have in molding reviewers' opinions) is discussed. (MLW)

Cites a new requirement at Purdue University that consideration for promotion and tenure for librarians be based on publications in library/information science rather than other fields in which they may have degrees. A survey of ARL libraries indicates that few academic libraries currently support this position. Five references are listed. (RAA)

Research suggests that role conflict exists among teacher-coaches due to the disparity in values between the two roles and to the fact that the two functions are fundamentally incompatible. The dilemma is further compounded by lack of clear role definition. Job descriptions for coach/teachers may vary greatly. (JN)
