Cudeck, Robert – Psychometrika, 2005
Quantitative psychology is concerned with the development and application of mathematical models in the behavioral sciences. Over time, models have become more complex, a consequence of the increasing complexity of research designs and experimental data, which is also a consequence of the utility of mathematical models in the science. As models…

McCartney, Mark – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2004
A simple mathematical model for how vehicles follow each other along a stretch of road is presented. The resulting linear second-order differential equation with constant coefficients is solved and interpreted. The model can be used as an application of solution techniques taught at first-year undergraduate level and as a motivator to encourage…

Mukherjee, Arup – Education, 2004
Students majoring in Management Information Systems (MIS) are required to take a course in Decision Support Systems (DSS) as part of their information systems core at this university. In a typical course on DSS, students are taught about use of mathematical models for solving large complex problems. They learn about the power, efficiency,…

Fischer, Gerhard H. – Psychometrika, 2004
This paper discusses a new form of specifying and normalizing a Linear Logistic Test Model (LLTM) as suggested by Bechger, Verstralen, and Verhelst ("Psychometrika," 2002). It is shown that there are infinitely many ways to specify the same normalization. Moreover, the relationship between some of their results and equivalent previous…

McCartney, Mark – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2002
In this paper, the author introduces a simple problem relating to a pair of ladders. A mathematical model of the problem produces an equation which can be solved in a number of ways using mathematics appropriate to "A" level students or first year undergraduates. The author concludes that the ladder problem can be used in class to develop and…

Wood, Chris – Journal of College Counseling, 2005
This article presents an overview of the Supervisory Working Alliance Model (E. S. Bordin, 1983) and related research. The author proposes an extension of the model by applying it to evaluation and multicultural competency. The following major advantages of the model for supervision in college counseling centers are discussed: (a) model's…

Croucher, John S. – Australian Senior Mathematics Journal, 2006
A special but common type of scenario is one in which a company has a promotion that is designed to make the customer purchase more of their product than they otherwise might. Although this can be aimed specifically at children, it really applies to all persons. The basic premise is that the company issues a "set" of different items or…

Cahan, Sorel; Gamliel, Eyal – Journal of Educational Measurement, 2006
Despite its intuitive appeal and popularity, Thorndike's constant ratio (CR) model for unbiased selection is inherently inconsistent in "n"-free selection. Satisfaction of the condition for unbiased selection, when formulated in terms of success/acceptance probabilities, usually precludes satisfaction by the converse probabilities of…

Burt, Gordon – British Journal of Educational Technology, 2006
An in-depth investigation of the relationship between media effectiveness, essentiality, and amount of study was presented. Overall, effectiveness explains 48% of the variation in the amount of study. Students who found the media more effective studied the media more. Those media that were more effective were studied more. The relationship between…

Nadarajah, Saralees; Kotz, Samuel – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science & Technology, 2006
A truncated version of the Cauchy distribution is introduced. Unlike the Cauchy distribution, this possesses finite moments of all orders and could therefore be a better model for certain practical situations. One such situation in finance is discussed. Explicit expressions for the moments of the truncated distribution are also derived.

Machado, Armando; Rodrigues, Paulo – Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 2007
Two experiments examined how pigeons differentiate response patterns along the dimension of number. In Experiment 1, 5 pigeons received food after pecking the left key at least N times and then switching to the right key (Mechner's Fixed Consecutive Number schedule). Parameter N varied across conditions from 4 to 32. Results showed that run length…

Chu, Singfat – Journal of Statistics Education, 2007
The paper reports some initiatives to freshen up the typical undergraduate business forecasting course. These include (1) students doing research and presentations on contemporary tools and industry practices such as neural networks and collaborative forecasting (2) insertion of Logistic Regression in the curriculum (3) productive use of applets…

Grober, S.; Vetter, M.; Eckert, B.; Jodl, H.-J. – European Journal of Physics, 2007
We suggest that different string pendulums are positioned at different locations on Earth and measure at each place the gravitational acceleration (accuracy [delta]g is approximately equal to 0.01 m s[superscript -2]). Each pendulum can be remotely controlled via the internet by a computer located somewhere on Earth. The theoretical part describes…

Duke, Roger; Graham, Alan – Mathematics Teaching Incorporating Micromath, 2007
In this article, the authors describe how a Java applet can help to build learners' intuitions about basic ideas of algebra. "Matchbox Algebra" is a Java applet the authors have designed to enable learners to grasp a key idea in learning algebra: that the letter "x" may be thought of as representing an as-yet-unknown number. They describe the…

Problem. The development of critical-thinking skills during the professional training of respiratory therapists is imperative for good practice. Research evidence suggests that interactive instructional strategies are far more effective than traditional lectures. Missing from the literature are thick descriptions of how faculty organize the…
