Russell, James – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1981
Two experiments tested whether children fail to make transitive inferences because they forget the premises. Children did not justify incorrect inferences by incorrect premises. Results between nontransitive and transitive inferers parallelled similar studies with nonconserver- conserver dyads and were viewed as reinforcing the commonality between…

Zarit, Steven H.; And Others – Gerontologist, 1981
Two successive studies investigated teaching four memory training strategies and their effects on subjective memory complaints in the community- dwelling elderly. Evaluations revealed significant improvements in recall functioning among the memory training subjects. Results indicate concern about poor memory may reflect expectations about old age…

Yaden, David B., Jr. – Journal of Reading, 1982
Presents contrasting evidence on the rate of letter identification. (AEA)

Brandt, Elizabeth A. – Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest, 1981
Hypothesizes that Native Americans in the Southwest have a historical and contemporary aversion to writing and other relatively permanent means of data storage. Jarman, Ronald F. – Intelligence, 1980
A critique by Carroll of a study by Jarman and Das (EJ 171 820) is refuted in terms of the methodology and theory of the Jarman and Das study. Additionally, two general issues concerned with individual differences in cognitive processes and strategic behavior are elaborated beyond Carroll's discussion. (Author/CP)

Brezin, Michael J. – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1980
Reviews research on the storage and retrieval processes of memory and describes an information processing learning theory capable of interpreting the findings. Prescriptive aspects of the theory are applied to the problem of designing textual materials to enhance learning and retention, and a framework to stimulate future research is provided.…

Sakata, Reiko; Fendt, Paul F. – Lifelong Learning: The Adult Years, 1981
Research on factors affecting the aging learner, including intelligence, memory, motivation, loss of speed, and physical health is reviewed, refuting the belief that learning ability declines with age. Strategies and techniques for the education of older adults are recommended. (SK)

Leslie, Ron – Journal of Reading Behavior, 1980
In two experiments, a short-term recognition memory task that varied the number of letters distinguishing target and comparison stimuli was used to assess the ability of prereaders and beginning readers to utilize graphic information in a three-letter graphic pattern. (HOD)
Descriptors: Beginning Reading, Grade 1, Kindergarten, Language Patterns

Grimes, Lynn – Teaching Exceptional Children, 1981
Procedures for programing computers to deal with handicapped students, problems in selective attention, visual discrimination, reaction time differences, short term memory, transfer and generalization, recognition of mistakes, and social skills are discussed. (CL)

Dustman, Robert E.; Beck, Edward C. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1980
No significant decline in performance occurred before age 50. Decline in Memory-For-Designs Test performance after age 60 is sufficient to suggest caution in the use of the test for evaluation of brain damage in the older patient. (Author)
Descriptors: Adults, Age Differences, Comparative Analysis, Diagnostic Tests

Halford, Graeme S. – International Journal of Behavioral Development, 1980
Four groups of children (N=80; C.A. 6.6. to 12.5; M.A. 7.9 to 14.7) were tested for ability to reproduce five-element two- and three-dimensional patterns. Significant interaction and main effects were found. Three-dimensional pattern performance increased with age; all ages performed well on two-dimensional patterns. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Children, Cognitive Development, Developmental Stages

Larkin, Jill; And Others – Science, 1980
Focuses on human information processes and problem solving. Although a large body of knowledge is prerequisite to acquiring skill, the authors state that knowledge must be indexed by patterns that guide the person in a fraction of a second to relevant parts of the knowledge store. (Author/SA)
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Academic Achievement, Computers, Higher Education

Hicks, Carolyn – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 1980
Four experiments were carried out to examine the different recall strategies employed in a diagnostic test of visual sequential memory. The principal implication of the results is that good and poor readers may not differ with respect to visual memory but in their ability to employ a verbal labeling strategy. (Author/KC)

Revere, Virginia; Tobin, Sheldon S. – International Journal of Aging and Human Development, 1981
The mythicizing of significant figures, evidenced in reminiscence among the elderly, can be interpreted as an adaptational response that is different from making sense out of one's life. Later in life the past becomes unique, and in the myth becoming the reality, one's life becomes justified. (Author)
