Herman, Maureen L. – Mathematics Teacher, 1983
Key factors in mathematics remediation for high school students are examined. Levels of learning are discussed, and suggestions are given for working at different learning levels. Examples are given for remedial activities with area, multiplicain, and decimals and percent, and additional references are included. (MNS)

Wearne-Hiebert, Diana C.; Hiebert, James – School Science and Mathematics, 1983
This study looked at student difficulties with fractions by focusing on understanding of part/whole relationships. The sample consisted of two sixth-grade and two eighth-grade classes. A lack of substantial improvement from sixth to eighth grade on many fraction tasks was noted and viewed as cause for concern. (MP)

Zawojewski, Judith – Arithmetic Teacher, 1983
The study looked at the initial learning of decimal concepts at grades three, four, and five. Helping children understand the concepts of decimals prior to computational use is promoted as a major goal for elementary education. The investigation is seen to have provided insights that could be applied to instruction. (Author/MP)

Berman, Barbara; Friederwitzer, Fredda J. – School Science and Mathematics, 1983
It is viewed understandable that many teachers consider fractions one of the most difficult mathematical topics to teach. School experiences need careful planning to include sequential activities which develop accurate concepts, and concepts are thought best developed by activities which move along the concrete-to-abstract continuum. Hart, K. – Mathematics in School, 1981
An extensive investigation of pupil understanding of fractions at the secondary education level showed the majority tended to avoid using fractions, could not generalize about them, and probably did not see them as an extension of the set of whole numbers. (MP)

Winterridge, D. J., Ed. – Mathematics in School, 1980
Two responses to a prior report on significant figures and a discussion on outlining conventions for the accuracy of answers are included in this document. A clarification of the supposed error in the original report is noted at the beginning. (MP)

Walton, Doug – Mathematics in School, 1979
Presents a list of topics that are considered desirable for the majority of students to be exposed to in elementary school. Sample items from a test to be given to students entering secondary schools are also presented. (MK)

Moloney, Kevin; Stacey, Kaye – Mathematics Education Research Journal, 1997
Examines Australian students' conceptions of ordering decimals. Fifty secondary students studied over 12 months showed little change in their misconceptions. Whole number misconceptions are important in earlier years but disappear with time. The fraction misconception persists however, being displayed by approximately 20% of year 10 students. The…

Kuhns, Catherine L. – Teaching Children Mathematics, 1997
Presents activities that were used to celebrate "Half-Time Day", the halfway point of the school year. Includes various hands-on ways for children to experience the fraction 1/2, including learning centers and whole-group activities. (JRH)

Niemi, David – Journal of Educational Research, 1996
Several measures of fraction knowledge were developed and administered to 540 fifth-grade students in 22 classrooms. Students were asked to represent their conceptual knowledge in several task contexts and formats. Level of representational knowledge predicted performance on problem solving, justification, and explanation tasks. The assessments…

Sowder, Judith – Teaching Children Mathematics, 1997
Addresses the importance of making sure students clearly understand decimal numbers and their names. Discusses decimal notation and how students can be helped to construct meaning for decimal numbers to aid them in developing a sense for the sizes of decimal numbers. Concludes with two action research ideas. (AIM)

Pothier, Yvonne; Sawada, Daiyo – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1989
The focus of this article is on the verification processes children use when assessing the equality of parts produced by them when partitioning geometric shapes. Different processes and children's verbal proofs of equality are presented. Activities for mathematics instruction are suggested. (YP)

Nik Pa, Nik Azis – Journal of Science and Mathematics Education in Southeast Asia, 1988
Investigates the ways children used their schemes of fractions to interpret fraction situations. Records clinical interviews with nine children (grades three through five). Reports that children do not establish relationships among different schemes when giving meaning to a given situation. (Author/YP)
