Schwartz, Steven; Wiedel, Timothy C. – Intelligence, 1978
The relation between individual differences in verbal ability and memory for order was investigated. Results indicated that (1) order and item information may be retained separately; (2) verbal ability is related to short-term recall but not recognition of order; and (3) transformation of order at output increases the relation. Kail, Robert V., Jr.; Marshall, Christine Vereb – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1978
Four experiments investigated memory scanning rates of skilled and less skilled readers. In three experiments, reaction times of skilled readers were faster than those of less skilled readers with reading time partialled out (aloud and silent reading). Differences were not significant when the scan component in answering was minimized. (Author/RD)

Harkness, John E. – Journal of Veterinary Medical Education, 1978
Discussed are the promotion of long-term information retention and transfer through the modification of prose text with opportunities for practice and reinforcement, provisions to reduce forgetting, and simulation of realistic events. Learning principles, relevant reviews of literature, and applications of the principles are presented. (JMD)

Wagner, Daniel A. – Cognitive Psychology, 1978
The relationships of structural features of memory (e.g., short-term store) and of control processes in memory (e.g., verbal rehearsal) were compared according to age, rural-urban differences, and amount of education. Culturally-specific skills were also investigated in Moroccan rug sellers and Koranic students, and in American college students.…

Elliott, Colin – British Journal of Psychology, 1978
The time taken to name 56 drawings of objects on five separate occasions were analyzed for 21 ESN(M) children (i.e., moderately educationally subnormal) and 21 ESN(S) children (i.e., severely educationally subnormal), matched for picture-naming vocabulary. Results were discussed in terms of the Oldfield (1964) and Lachman (1973) models of lexical…

Barrett, Terry R.; And Others – American Journal of Psychology, 1978
Barrett, Maier, Ekstrand, and Pellegrino in 1975 reported relatively large drops in performance from the criterion trial to an immediate retention test using a study-test free-recall paradigm. The present experiment was designed to determine whether this criterion fall was associated with the use of a retrieval strategy involving short-term…

Pichert, James W.; Anderson, Richard C. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1977
College undergraduates read stories from one of two directed perspectives or no directed perspective. An idea's significance in terms of the assigned perspective affected both initial learning and recall one week later. Schemata, or conceptual frameworks, were assumed to aid in memory and retrieval. Hallum, Rosemary; Newhart, Edith Hom – Teacher, 1978
Your students will be using and building on reading-related skills during the rest of their schooling and throughout their lives. Here are some learning exercises emphasizing reading-skill activities as well as projects related to other curriculum areas. (Author/RK)

Friedman, Morton – Educational Research Quarterly, 1977
Significant differences were found between teacher emphasis of the memory and application levels of Bloom's Taxonomy and pupil achievement at those levels. At the memory level, differences in achievement were probably not due to differences in ability. At the application level, differences in pupil achievement may be due to ability, not teacher…

Runquist, Willard N.; Horton, Keith D. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
Five experiments were conducted comparing performance on paired-associate lists of stimuli that rhymed with lists of stimuli that did not rhyme. Results are discussed in terms of the role of input position cues in aiding discrimination among items. (Editor/RK)
