Borasi, Raffaella – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1985
Four different conceptions of error-making from a pedagogical perspective are developed. Using errors as springboards for learning is advocated, so that better understanding of content and of the nature of mathematics results. (MNS)

Stepus, George Wayne – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1985
This is a report of an application of the interpretation of errors and springboards in a real-life situation. If and why we need to reduce fractions is considered. (MNS)

Borasi, Raffaella; Michaelsen, Jean – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1985
A common mistake in adding fractions involves the confusion betwen the concepts of fraction and ratio. A coherent system to operate with ratios is developed. (MNS)

Borasi, Raffaella – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1985
Several intuitive proofs for evaluating specific infinite expressions are given. Observations on intuition and errors in mathematics are included. (MNS)

Fennema, Elizabeth; Tartre, Lindsay A. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1985
Investigated was how girls and boys who were discrepant in their spatial and verbal performance used spatial visualization skills in solving word problems and fraction problems. It was concluded that low spatial visualization skill may be more debilitating to girls' mathematical problem solving than to boys'. (MNS)

Van de Walle, John; Thompson, Charles S. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1984
Fraction strips are suggested as good conceptual models to focus on the meaning of fractions. Making the strips, beginning activities, connecting symbols, more concept activities, and working with two fractions are each illustrated. (MNS)

Mathematics Teacher, 1984
Included in this section are brief articles on an algebraic puzzler, periodic decimal fractions with computers, and the arrow method of teaching logarithms. (MNS)

Lauritzen, Carol – Arithmetic Teacher, 1985
Discusses the "Every Pupil Response" (EPR) strategy and its use in teaching basic facts, problem-solving, place value, and fractions. Basically, the technique involves children responding simultaneously to a question by holding up a card, using parts of their bodies, or stick figures. Advantages of EPR are noted. (JN)

Trafton, Paul R.; Zawojewski, Judith S. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1984
Division of fractions and division of decimals, both troublesome, are discussed in relation to helping students learn well and retain what they have learned. A strong conceptual base, mastery of related concepts and skills, and meaningful development are stressed. (MNS)

Uprichard, A. Edward; Phillips, E. Ray – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1977
A hierarchy for rational number addition was constructed using intraconcept analysis. A test to assess mastery at each of 45 levels was administered to 200 elementary students representing a wide range of achievement and ability levels. Implications of the results for development of optimal instructional sequences are discussed. (Author/DT)

Middleton, James A.; Toluk, Zulbiye; de Silva, Teruni; Mitchell, Wendy – 2001
This study investigates the development of 5th grade children's understanding of quotient and the classroom norms and practices that constrain or enable that understanding. It reports not only how the children's understandings develop, but also why and under what conditions they develop. The results of this study indicate that children progressed…

Immerzeel, George; Wiederanders, Don – Arithmetic Teacher, 1974
Four ideas are presented, each a variation of the tic-tac-toe game. Recognizing three addends is the goal of the primary level game; experiences with basic facts and fractions are objectives for upper levels. Each worksheet includes objectives, directions, and comments. (LS)

Dugdale, Sharon – Classroom Computer News, 1983
Discusses computer games (called intrinsic models) focusing on mathematics rather than on unrelated motivations (flashing lights or sounds). Games include "Green Globs," (equations/linear functions), "Darts"/"Torpedo" (fractions), "Escape" (graphing), and "Make-a-Monster" (equivalent fractions and…

Hannah, Max; Henry, Bruce – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1981
A unit on the division of decimals by decimals that used electronic calculators as a teaching aid is described. The learning package created, the operation of the project, and several outcomes are presented. The results strongly indicated that mathematics can be taught using a calculator. (MP)
