Lacher, Miriam R. – Child Development, 1976
Effects of action content and verbal codability of stimulus pictures, parental occupational status and verbal intelligence upon nonverbal serial recall were investigated in white first graders. (Author/SB)

Richardson, Jack – American Journal of Psychology, 1976
The evidence from studies of component selection in paired-associate learning is reviewed and then considered in relation to Martin's (1968) hypothesis of encoding variability and Rudy's (1974) model of variations in the associative process. Component-selection tasks are also compared to verbal concept-formation tasks. (Editor)

Keitz, Suzanne M.; Gounard, Beverley Roberts – Educational Gerontology, 1976
Prior research has shown that adults generally remember pictorial stimuli better than printed words. The present study was designed to determine whether memory for these two visual modes might be differentially affected by age. These results indicate that memory processes in the elderly differ quantitatively and not qualitatively. (Author)

Engle, Randall W.; Mobley, Linda A. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
This study tests the idea that visual presentation leads to higher performance on a delayed recall test than auditory presentation. It is predicted that the normal immediate free recall procedure yields a different pattern of results on a delayed test than a condition having immediate recall of each list. (CLK)

Singer, Murray – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Reports on four experiments designed to compare the accuracy of the listener's memory for information associated with the thematic and nonthematic portions of sentences. Results are consistent with the identification of the nonthematic portion of a sentence as the locus of new ideas conveyed to the language recipient. (CLK)

Hummel, Robert D. – Unterrichtspraxis, 1976
This paper demonstrates how attention to developmental skills at every stage of language instruction enhances mastery of specific structural targets. A college German course in which a high degree of reading comprehension is the objective is used; Modified-Adjective Construction is the specific structural target. (CHK)

Huttenlocher, Janellen; Newcombe, Nora – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Reports on 5 experiments investigating the effect of blocking words according to semantic category on ordered recall in adults and young children. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Adults, Children, Cognitive Processes, Language Processing
Moscovitch, Morris; Craik, Fergus I. M. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Three experiments were conducted to examine the relations between retrieval and encoding in a levels-of-processing framework. (Author/RM)

Posnansky, Carla J.; Neumann, Paul G. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1976
The present studies demonstrated that children as young as second graders could form prototypical representations from a set of highly similar stimuli. (Author/SB)

Pociask, Fredrick D.; Morrison, Gary – Association for Educational Communications and Technology, 2004
Human working memory can be defined as a component system responsible for the temporary storage and manipulation of information related to higher level cognitive behaviors, such as understanding and reasoning (Baddeley, 1992; Becker & Morris, 1999). Working memory, while able to manage a complex array of cognitive activities, presents with an…

Altarriba, Jeanette – 2001
Language appears at multiple levels of representation in memory. In most cases, languages have a particular system of sounds (phonology), meaning (semantics), form (orthography), and common usage (pragmatics). For a bilingual speaker, these appear for two different sets of concepts. Sometimes, these concepts overlap, as is the case for…

Wilkerson, Kirsten; Laurent, Jeff; Catanzaro, Salvatore J.; McBride, Dawn M. – Online Submission, 2005
The purpose of this study was to investigate memory of threatening and non-threatening information among adolescents. Specifically, the study tested the prediction of cognitive theories of anxiety that anxious and non-anxious individuals process threatening information differently. High school students (n = 187) from a moderately sized Midwestern…

Cote, Nathalie – 1994
Students often fail to store new information in memory in a way that is accessible or useful. The information they have acquired is inert. This paper examines the inert knowledge problem in the context of learning from informational expository text. Kintsch and van Dijk (1978) have suggested a framework for understanding learning from expository…
