Hale, Gordon A. – 1971
This study was designed to investigate the functional similarity of the mental processes children use to learn verbal tasks and pictorial tasks. Children in grades 3 and 6 (n=144) and in grade 9 (n=112) were given four short paired-associate tasks entitled Pictures, Concrete Words, Abstract Words, and Japanese Characters. The tasks consisted of…

Eoff, John E.; Rohwer, William D., Jr. – 1972
A three-way design was used to assess the effect of imagery instructions in noun-pair learning. The three principal factors were instructions (imagery versus rehearsal versus control), presentation mode (words versus pictures), and grade (1, 3, 6, and 11). Sixty subjects were drawn from each grade and randomly assigned to the six conditions.…

Beuhring, Trisha; Kee, Daniel W. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1987
Two experiments examine the relationships among metamemory knowledge, the use of associative memory strategies such as elaboration, and cued-recall memory. Results show that metamemory development predicted most of the grade difference in cued recall, suggesting that metamemory development may explain improvements in retrieval strategies as well.…

Feitelson, Dina; Razel, Micha – International Journal of Behavioral Development, 1984
Examines the notion that words are sometimes perceived with greater ease than letters and that word shape sometimes plays a role in the perception of words. The data collected from 40 Israeli kindergarteners revealed that beginning readers found it easier to identify single letters than whole words, thus refuting the above notion. (Author/AS)

Baumann, James F. – Reading Research Quarterly, 1986

Nelson, Douglas L.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1979
These experiments focus upon two assumptions of the levels of processing formulation: that context provides exclusive control over the qualitative nature of encoding, and that amount recalled is determined both by cue-trace compatibility and by depth. The results cast doubt upon the validity of each assumption. (Author/MH)

Hill, Roslyn; And Others – Journal of Child Language, 1997
Examines the role of prior intention and knowledge in the comprehension of "forget" by young children. Results reveal that children initially have two interpretations of "forget": an unfilled desire and a state of not knowing. Discusses explanations for the late comprehension of "forget" in terms of representation of knowledge and intention,…

Small, Parker A., Jr. – Journal of Medical Education, 1988
Medical education must put more emphasis on teaching that improves students' abilities to make associations. Two teaching methods that can promote development of the necessary association skills in clinical contexts--"wait time" and "concept mapping"--are briefly reviewed. (Author/MLW)

Ellis, Nick C. – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 1996
Argues that much of language acquisition is sequence learning and that the resultant long-term knowledge base of language sequences serves as the database for grammar acquisition.
