Hampel, Paul J. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1984
Presents: (1) a computer program which will change a fraction into a decimal; (2) a program in which students supply missing lines to create the output given; and (3) suggestions for adding computer awareness to classrooms, including use of used punch cards and old computer-generated printouts. (JN)

Behr, Merlyn J.; And Others – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1985
The development of a quantitative concept of rational numbers was explored in interviews with 16 fourth and fifth graders in two cities. High performers used a flexible and spontaneous application of concepts of rational number order and fraction equivalence, and a reference point, while low achievers tended not to. (MNS)

Sherzer, Laurence – Mathematics Teacher, 1986
Describes a process which allows students to explore repeating decimals without being inhibited by the limitations of the calculator display. In addition, the process can take some of the mystery from the decimal forms of rational numbers. (JN)

Shaw, Jean – Arithmetic Teacher, 1985
Students are given the opportunity to deal with many kinds of data as they make graphs and interpret the results of polls. Worksheets are provided on filling in a graph grid and making bar and circle graphs as well as interpreting each. (MNS)

Kieren, Thomas – 1999
This essay is based on observation and interpretation of the mathematical language of children while they engage in situations involving fractional numbers. This interpretation includes the consideration of various levels of language use, informal metamorphic and metonymic uses of fractional number language, and the interplay between language use…

Lo, Jane-Jane; Cai, Jinfa; Watanabe, Tad – 2001
In this study, we examined the introduction of ratio and proportion concepts in six textbook series from four different regions, China, Japan, Taiwan and U.S. When analyzing the definition of ratio and equal ration as well as the types of ratio and proportion application problems included in each textbook series, we found similarities and…

Immerzeel, George; Wiederanders, Donald – Arithmetic Teacher, 1971
The experiences described here use the idea of movement along the number line to reinforce the student's concept of addition and subtraction of both whole numbers and fractions. Four student worksheets and teacher guides are included. (MM)

Mathematics Teacher, 1982
The first idea presented is an activity aimed at teaching students to reduce a fraction to lowest terms by looking for the greatest common factor (GCF) of the numerator and denominator. The second idea looks at ways to construct solution problems that are challenging but which do not bog pupils down. (MP)

Streefland, Leen – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1982
A process of teaching fractions is detailed that respects pupil ideas and concept images and builds on these in a way that helps children to develop personal algorithms. This approach is an attempt to get away from perceived one-sided views found in most textbooks. (MP)

Bergan, John R. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1981
This study investigated the extent to which various latent class models adequately described elementary rule-governed mathematical behaviors. Children were given a fraction concepts test. Results supported the adoption of a set of three-class models including a mastery class, a nonmastery class, and a transitional class to describe the data.…
