Education in Your Hand
Violino, Bob
Community College Journal, v83 n1 p38-41 Aug-Sep 2012
With the rising popularity of personal mobile devices, from smartphones to tablets, an increasing number of colleges are asking students and teachers to bring their own technology to class. The so-called bring your own device, or BYOD, movement promises easier access to resources such as textbooks and educational services for students, and increased productivity and enhanced collaboration among faculty and staff. Some community colleges are beginning to launch BYOD programs or informal efforts to manage the use of mobile devices on campus. Prince George's Community College (PGCC) in Largo, Md., started researching a BYOD initiative under another project designed to bring pervasive wireless communications to the campus in 2010, says Manuel Arrington, director of network services at PGCC. As part of that initiative, the college contracted with Aruba Networks to build a wireless network on campus modeled on the company's Mobile Virtual Enterprise (MOVE) architecture. The project began in April 2011, and most major functional areas were completed by February 2012. PGCC students, employees, and visitors can now access an upgraded wireless network at the main campus and at the college's five extension centers. Benefits and challenges of running a BYOD program are discussed.
