Media, Millennials, and the Academy: Understanding the State of Media Literacy within Higher Education
Schmidt, H. C.
Journal on Excellence in College Teaching, v23 n4 p53-75 2012
While the perception exists that today's university students are digital natives, comfortable with all forms of new media and digital technology, previous research has suggested that there may be limits to our students' media savvy. This study considers the extent to which students possess competencies related to the message communication dimension of media literacy. Data gathered from a student questionnaire (N = 409) suggest that students only infrequently learn about or engage in activities associated with mediated message communication, yet they feel that related topics are important to address within university-level classes.
