Creating Empowering Educational Experiences through a Feminist Approach
Chuang, Pei-Fen
Teacher Education and Practice, v25 n1 p131-146 Win 2012
This article presents an innovative approach to preparing future teachers at a teachers college in Taiwan. The approach outlined here is designed to emphasize the beneficial effects of a feminist leader in providing an empowering educational experience to preservice teachers. The traditional university classroom approach often does not promote thought, exploration, open-mindedness, and the feeling of unlimited possibilities. The Self-Exploration class used in this study and the teaching techniques employed by the feminist instructor are designed to give these future teachers the confidence they will need to help implement the reforms necessary to lead us boldly into the future. The students' beliefs, attitudes, ideas, and mind-set in general were found to be clarified and strengthened as a result of the class assignments and follow-up discussions.
