On a recent Saturday morning, 20 inmate mothers filed into the prison chapel at Alabama's Tutwiler Prison to participate in a unique program--The Storybook Project, a program of Aid to Inmate Mothers (AIM). AIM is a nonprofit organization that helps mothers in prison stay in contact with their children during their incarceration. At the front of the sanctuary, several long tables were set up with a colorful display of several hundred children's books. Mothers chose books from among a selection of stories about animals and dinosaurs, along with baby board books. A group of volunteers stationed themselves around the chapel, each in private corners, ready to operate the recorders. After the mothers chose a book, they were assigned a volunteer, who helped them record themselves reading the book for their children. Through this program, their children gained something they couldn't take away from a simple visit: the sound of their mother's voice. The children could listen to the recordings whenever they felt lonely. They also received the gift of a book chosen especially for them by their mothers. For many of the women, reading a story to their children is a new experience, but something they find enjoyable. Many of them comment on the variety of books and say that they had no idea that so many great children's books are available. AIM is hoping that these mothers will continue the habit of reading to their children when they return home, and that their children, in turn, will reap the benefits, forever associating reading with the comfort and love of their mother's voice.
