Commentary: Allocating the Blend in Blended Learning
Parslow, Graham R.
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education, v40 n4 p276 Jul-Aug 2012
The biochemistry course at Stanford Medical School has been redesigned to incorporate online lectures. The Stanford instructors provide short online presentations then use class time for interactive discussions of clinical vignettes to highlight the biochemical basis of various diseases. Contemporary video capture equipment makes video lectures relatively easy to create for students who increasingly have a personal schedule that does not synchronize with conventional timetabling. History has shown that every mix of delivery, using contemporary technology, has worked for as long as the enthusiasm of the innovators remains current. Current digital technology overcomes many of the factors underlying the failure of previous delivery schemes. Stanford may be at the forefront of radically changing the blend of biochemical education. They are using technology that is cheap, familiar to the students, and appropriate to contemporary life styles. Increasingly, the blend of teaching in many other courses will incorporate online video lectures.
