On June 16, 2011, Dr. Regina Benjamin, Surgeon General of the United States, released the "National Prevention and Health Promotion Strategy: America's Plan for Better Health and Wellness," described as "the nation's first-ever National Prevention Strategy" by the U.S. Surgeon General. This was one of at least 38 provisions in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPaACA) that collectively have the potential to accelerate the pace of the evolution of the health promotion field and grow its size several fold. These 38 provisions represent a small fraction of the hundreds of provisions in the full bill. In this article, the author discusses the origin of these provisions and shares his perspective in integrating health promotion in the national agenda. (Contains 1 table and 1 figure.)
