What New Teachers Want from Colleagues
Bieler, Deborah
Educational Leadership, v69 n8 p46-49 May 2012
If veteran teachers made a list of resolutions for what they'd do next school year to better support new teachers in their schools, what actions and approaches should top those lists? The question has high stakes because half of all new teachers leave the profession within the first five years. Researchers have identified "support from the school administration" as a key thing that would help more new teachers keep teaching beyond the five-year mark, and support from teacher leaders would surely help newcomers as well. Bieler asked five recent graduates from the teacher education program at the University of Delaware--who all went into K-12 teaching and are still there--what actions veteran teachers can and should take to help new teachers. A common thread in the five responses that the article presents was the wish to feel part of a teaching community and to share reflection, ideas, resources, and friendship with veteran teachers. Respondents mentioned such specifics as grading papers together and joining forces to discipline students. Bieler reflects on what school leaders can do to encourage this kind of support from experienced teachers.
